PRO 1
An average galaxy contains a hundred billion stars. We suspect there are perhaps a hundred billion galaxies in the universe. Although this is an educated guess (only 1 billion galaxies are known), even being off by several factors of ten still means that there is a vast supply of stars out there for life..
PRO 2
In 1995, a massive object was found to be orbiting the star 51 Pegasi. Since that discovery, 24 planets have been discovered orbiting other stars. In 4 short years we've discovered more extrasolar planetary bodies than exist in our own solar system!
PRO 3
Planetary systems seem common. This view is further bolstered by Hubble Space Telescope images of the Orion nebula that show many disc-shaped dust clouds swirling around young stars.
