In 1985, the National Institute for Justice reported that:
* 3/5 of felons polled agreed that "a criminal is not going to mess around with a victim he knows is armed with a gun."
* 74% of felons polled agreed that "one reason burglars avoid houses when people are at home is that they fear being shot during the crime."
* 57% of felons polled agreed that "criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running onto the police."
Citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as police do every year
Data reported by the FBI. In 1995, there were 21,597 people murdered, 12,066 with handguns, yet only 179 justifiable homicides by civilians using handguns to defend themselves.
In 1996, handguns were used to kill 30 people in Britain, 106 in Canada, 211 in Germany and 9,390 in America. Americans are 15 times more likely to be killed by gunfire than Europeans.
The England and Canada murder rates were already low before their gun control laws were passed. Thus, their restrictive laws cannot be credited with lowering their crime rates. And the murder rates in England, Canada, and Japan have risen tremendously since passing their gun control laws.
Firearm violence is currently the second leading cause of injury-related death, behind automobile-related fatalities, in the United States. By the year 2003, firearm fatalities are projected to become the United States leading cause of injury-related death, unless the violence is curbed. In fact, the firearm death rate is increasing faster than any other cause of death except AIDS-related fatalities.
Of the 2.4 million times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, in 92% of these defensive uses, the mere sight of a gun or a warning shot scares off their attackers. Less than 8% of the time, a citizen will kill or wound his/her attacker.
Of the 2.4 million self defense cases, more than 192,000 are women defending themselves against sexual abuse.
Handguns are the weapons of choice for self defense. Citizens use handguns to protect themselves over 1.9 million times a year.
