Background 1

Due to news accounts and rumors of torture, John McCain sponsored a bill  based on the American army's own field manual which states that “no individual in the custody or under the physical control of the United States government, regardless of nationality or physical location, shall be subject to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” It passed in the Senate by 90 votes to nine.  President Bush signed McCain's anti-torture amendment, but soon after released a “signing statement,” which noted that they would interpret the amendment “in a manner consistent with the constitutional authority of the president to supervise the unitary executive branch and as commander in chief and consistent with the constitutional limitations on judicial power.” Senator McCain and some of his congressional allies interpreted this as a way for the administration to get around Congress's intent.

The United States has a proud tradition of human rights, it is something that we expect of other countries. John McCain was himself tortured in Vietnam, he wants to do everything possible to keep our solders from being tortured. He realizes that we cannot expect other countries not to torture when we do it ourselves.

PRO 2.1

If torturing some terrorist will save one solders life, then it is worth it. Let alone the possibility of stopping another 9/11.

President Bush is a Born Again Christian, how can torture in any form, be compatible with the teachings of Jesus Christ?  WWJD, what would Jesus do? I don't think torture fits with "turn the other cheek", or "do unto other's what you would have them to do to you".

PRO 3.1

President Bush has a sworn duty to protect the citizens of the United States and should do what ever it takes.

Torture has not been shown to be effective at getting reliable information.

You can be sure that if the United States uses torture, it will create new terrorist. It's also could cause a loss of international support.
