My question is simple. What makes abortion such a heated and argued debate topic? I personally see no problem with abortion being that I am pro-choice but for some reason, I can't grasp the understanding of what makes people so passionate against it. Before I hear any comments or rebuttals, I'll put out my overall concept on the topic.

In my honest opinion, first and foremost, the belief that a fetus is not necessarily a human being is rather incorrect. It is a collection of cells which grows into a human through mitosis. Although the concept that it is a living organism is partly incorrect I do acknowledge that it has the potential of life even though it's not necessarily alive yet. It cannot survive without a host, i.e. the mother.

The reason I chose being pro-choice is that I feel that the rights and happiness of the mother is more necessary and important than the future existence of the unborn child. If the mother is unhappy with her child, the child will be unhappy and that could turn dangerous. Notice I said could. Although there is that slim chance that the child will turn out okay, the more likely opposition is that the child turns to something more violent.

That's just the tip of my opinion but I hope it's enough for someone to start something with me. I'm new here but I've had some experience debating so don't expect an easy time :P

That's an interesting view. My opinion is that while the mother does have rights, she only has an expected 50 years or so to live. Meanwhile, the baby she's carrying is expected to live the normal amount, 70 years at least. In a vacuum, If I had to choose between saving a child and an elderly man, I'd save the child, because he would have more life ahead of him.

In addition, most abortions are not done for the health of the mother, but rather to protect her from shame. I simply don't believe that a women should be able to end 70+ years of life simply to have one more free year herself.

Just because a fetus can't survive without a host doesn't mean it is any less human. Would you call a baby inhuman? I have yet to see one who could survive without anyone feeding/sheltering/caring for it. Just because a unborn child needs a physical connection in the form of the umbilical cord to survive doesn't mean that it's need is any more or less strong than that of a baby and its parent.

@akrolsmir - you might want to check your sources. Shame is not a top reason why women have abortions. Financial and economic reasons as well as being too young tends to be towards the top. Shame comes more from the intimidation of christians who use it to deter women from having them.

@punksoab You raise a very good question. What is it with American christians obsession with the fetus? The religious right doesn't seem to have cold calculated campaigns against heart disease, cancer, or gun violence in this country. They seem centrally focused on the fetus.

Personally i feel abortion is a very horrible thing that should be avoided at all costs. But the option needs to be there for the woman that believes she needs it. Forcing a woman to give birth, regardless of her past indiscretions is a violation of freedom. Since we live in America, those freedoms need to be upheld. This is not the same as what we consider "traditional murder". Her body is directly effected by the fetus living inside of her. Because of this, she should have the right to remove it if she wishes.

Here are the facts on Abortion. Read Through and You'll know why Pro-Lifers are so pasionate. Plus look up the video called Silent Scream its old but the information and facts in it are still true. After reading this and viewing the video you still say your pro-choice then you are as blind as a man with no eyes and as heartless as the tin man.

Surgical
1. Suction-aspiration. Up to 3 months. 80% of all abortions. Commonly known as vacuum abortions. A hollow plastic tube is used to dismember and suck the baby out of the mother and into a bottle. The instrument used for this abortion is 10-29 times more powerful than a home vacuum cleaner.

2. Dilation and Curettage (D&C). 2nd and 3rd month. This abortion is similar to the suction method, except a surgical knife is inserted into the womb and is used to cut the baby apart. The baby is scraped out through the cervix. This abortion should not be confused with a therapeutic D&C, which is done on a non-pregnant woman.

3. Dilation and Evacuation (D&E). Usually up to 4 months (sometimes more). Forceps are inserted, grasping the parts of the baby's body. These parts are torn off and removed from the mother. After 12 weeks the skull must be crushed by forceps for removal.

4. Saline abortion. 4 to 7 months. A strong salt solution (saline) is injected into the womb. The baby breathes and swallows the solution which slowly poisons and suffocates her while it slowly burns her skin. The child usually dies 1 to 2 hours later. The mother goes into labor and delivers a dead or dying baby.

5. Prostaglandin abortion. 4 to 8 months. Prostaglandins are hormones needed for birth. Injecting them into the womb induces premature birth of a baby too young to survive outside the womb. Usually the child dies during the trauma of the premature labor.

6. Hysterotomy. 6 to 8 months. This abortion is like a birth by Cesarean section, except the purpose is to kill the baby. An incision is made through the abdomen into the womb. The baby is killed by various means including drowning in a bucket of water, suffocation with the placenta, cutting the cord while the baby is in the uterus depriving her of oxygen, or allowed to die by neglect.

7. Partial birth abortion or Dilation and Extraction. (D&X). 4 1/2 to 8 months. Newest method in use. Developed because the "classic" D&E method was "difficult due to the toughness of the fetal tissues at this stage of development," (Dr. Martin Haskell, NAF, 1992). This method was also developed to overcome the "complication" of live birth from the saline, prostaglandin and hysterotomy abortions. A D&X abortion involves completely delivering a baby's body except for the head. While the head is still inside the mother, a sharp instrument is forced into the back of the baby's head to make an opening for the insertion of an instrument to suction the brain out of the skull. After the brain is removed, the skull is crushed and the rest of the baby's body is delivered.

What happens to the aborted babies? Aborted babies are often dumped into plastic bags for disposal in the trash or sold by the bag for fetal transplant and experimentation. Some are run through a garbage disposal. Live fetuses have been subjected to grisly experiments--bodies have been dissected, chests sliced open to observe heart action, heads cut off for bizarre purposes. Babies have been conceived and aborted for the unproved purpose of using their cells to treat adults with diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. (John Wilke, Abortion Questions & Answers Cincinnati: Hayes Publishing Co., 1988 Chapter 25; Randy Alcorn, ProLife Answers to ProChoice Arguments Portland: Multinomah Press, 1992. p188.)

Does the baby feel pain during an abortion? "As early as 8-10 weeks gestation, and definitely by thirteen and a half weeks, the human fetus experiences pain." (V. Collins, MD and Diplomatic and Fellow, American Board of Anesthesiologists.) Dr. Collins was one of 26 doctors from around the country, including pain specialists and two past presidents of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who sent a letter in 1984 to Ronald Reagan saying: "Mr. President, in drawing attention to the capability of the human fetus to feel pain, you stand on firmly established ground." (Wilke, p.64 and 69).

You make an interesting point, but those cells will still turn into a human being so if you kill the cells you are killing a future human being.

I believe that abortion is is wrong because the women had sex and if she wasn't ready to deal with having a baby then she shouldn't have had sex. Everyone knows that is one of the consequences. A person shouldn't have a abortion just because she is too young or she doesn't have any money. I know some people think this is a good reason but it isn't if the person is too young to have a child then she shouldn't be having sex in the first place! and if the person doesn't have any money she should be working, not fooling around. The only time i think an abortion is alright is if the person was raped and happened to get pregnat

The 'it will turn into a human being' point is somewhat uncertain. Firstly, over 70% of all pregancies end in miscarriage, usually without the woman ever knowing she was pregnant. So it MIGHT turn into a person.

So MIGHT a sperm cell. yes the odds are lower, but we are talking potential, not probability.

However, in the end, the woman is an actual, real person, with actual real rights under the constitution. Her decision must be paramount. To be honest, I dont like it, but thats the way it has to be.

I think abortion is fine if the fetus can't feel it or if the Mother is in danger.

[random]

Are you saying it is "alright" to make a child pay for the sins of the Father?

Or is your belief simply that woman should have to pay the "consequence" for having sex?

You do not refer the the fetus in your statement, do you believe a fetus is deserving of protection?

Personally, I feel like abortion is killing a life that had not yet had a chance to live. It is like killing a kitten or a puppy. Nobody wants to see or do that.

There is of course the occasional "rape" or having cancer situation, then if you're not fit to HOLD the baby, then maybe, but you could always deliver and then put the baby up for an adoption. But honestly, why is killing an innocent child even an option? Again, you're killing a life that has yet even had a chance to live. It could potentially become our president one day or feed the kids in Africa who have barely any choice but to be put up for an adoption just to save his/her life anyways!!
