How do you feel about the legalization and regulation of marijuana to control its use and abuse and to help curb the black market effect caused by the nations current philosophy of prohibition.

Taxation would, indeed, lead to goverment profits. But there is always the rumored story that evertime you buy drugs, you're supporting terrorists. The credibility of that rumor is often questioned. I think that rumor was made up by the government to scare users out of buyinmg drugs and decreasing the profits of the black market. I think the decision of legalizing medical marijuana should be left up to medical experts to analyze and present their findings to the goverment officials who would vote on this subject.[i]

If marijuana was completely legalized, then supply would go way up, the price would go way down, and drug kingpins (some of which could be involved in terrorism) would see their profits erased.

the "guest" who posted on this thread is a moron, and speaking for responsible, sentient smokers, i apologize.  why not legalize it?  i agree with the other posts that legalizing marijuana would collapse a large underground market, and at the same time put revenue in the pockets of the government.  after all, if the government can make more money by taxing pot smokers, maybe the non-pot smokers could benefit by a decrease in their taxes.  and decriminalization would also reduce court costs, and the cost of incarcerating yet another "dangerous" criminal in our overcrowded prisons.  And even better...if pot was legalized and sold by the government, you have created jobs for starving farmers to grow it for the government, the government could sell it for a fair price, tax it, and it would probably still be cheaper than what you find on the street today.  (however i would probably still maintain a small garden for myself  :>)

Weed is legal here in the Netherlands, and it works. I think you should all think about this:
THE USE OF SOFTDRUGS IN THE USA IS HIGHER THAN IN AMSTERDAM

Q: Which is safest for the body?  regulated marijuana, beer, ciggs, or fatty foods?
A: Marijuana, beer is shown to give you liver cancer, ciggs show to give you lung cancer, and fatty foods give you heart cancer

Fun Facts

US spends way over 9 billion dollars a year jailing people just for possession of marijuana

reports say that marijuana cost taxpayers 50 billion a year directly on taxes

Marijuana is shown not to be physically addictive

The view that legalizing marijuana will lead to a lot of young potheads is a common misconception

If the drug were to be legalized, then it would be in controll of the government, hence taking it off of the black market, regulating it, controlling who gets it, and taxing it.

The government should have no say in what an individual wants to do to his body.  As long as he does no harm to the rest of society

Bottom line, there is no reason to illegalize it

control it, regulate it, and tax it.

i think it may be possible that more of the younger generation will take to marajuana if it is legalized because it will be easier for them to obtain, but there is also the fact that, if they had wanted it before, legal or no, they would have likely hae found a way, though some avoided it because of the law, therefore the slight increase. but i think that many people have a negative view on drugs, or just marajuana, i dont know, but i think theyd still avoid it, whether it is legal or not.

for medical reasons, im not sure whether it should, or not. if there are no alternatives to the drug then yes, but only with the patients consent of course. but if there is an alternative..then why are we even considering the need to legalize it for medical reasons

i dont know what my opinion is overall because it doesnt really effect me directly in any way, so i havnt thought much about it, and it'd take me time to come to a complete conclusion.
