There are actually a couple different types of Satanists.
Religious Satanists recognize Satan, generally as a life principle. Followers normally consist of serious adults. Contrary to popular belief, the Satan that they recognize has few if any points of similarity with the historical Muslim or Christian concept of Satan. The Satanists' concept of Satan is pre-Christian, and derived from the Pagan image of power, virility, sexuality and sensuality. To almost religious Satanists, Satan is a force of nature, not a living quasi-deity. Their Satan has nothing to do with Hell, demons, pitchforks, sadistic torture, buying people's souls, demonic possession, performing miracles, human sacrifices, cannibalism, and profoundly evil deeds.  In the past, Satanists occasionally engaged in the portrayal of a Black Mass in Latin for publicity purposes. They have ridiculed the Roman Catholic Mass. But, otherwise, their rituals have no connection to those of Christianity.  Their cardinal rules list that no sin is greater than the sin of stupidity, & also includes that "you shall not harm little children".
The other type of active Satanism is often referred to as "Satanic dabbling" & is usually teens or young adults in it for the "shock factor" in order to rebel against their parents and/or society-satanic dabbling has nothing to do with religious beliefs.
As far as why so many seem to be against them (namely Christians)...that apparently stems from misinformation & ignorance to what Satanists really are. To most Christians, anything that isn't exactly aligned with what they believe has to come from their concept of absolute evil, (e.g. the biblical Satan), so that automatically makes it bad. Wiccans, Pagans, & Witches go through the same problem with Christians-too many Christians accuse us of being "satanic" because we don't believe in their god, & even tell us that we're too stupid to know we're being decieved by this "satan" character.
I hope I've answered your questions...if you need further information, this is a great link.

If you are serious about learning what Satanisim truly is why not check out my Satanic Site & Ignore the BS that both Christians & Wiccans claim it to be. Both Wiccans & Christians are anti Satanisim.
I call Wiccans & Christians view of Satanisim  religious Intolerence.
Check out my side there are two sides to every story:

Also buy all the books by Anton Lavey
And read The Devils Apocrypha.
Remember there are both Modern Satanists as well as Traditional Satanists.

Merry Meet,

The religious intolerance seems to lie with you, friend.  Im not sure what Wiccans you know, but nearly all paths teach that ones course is his/her own.  Actually, most of the Satanist I've met condiscend on me for my beliefs.  The fact is, religious intolerance is a personal choice (save most Christians).

Nicely said Cerridwen.

Bright Blessings,
Rob
