I beleive, sir, that the ten commandments are not the Power of the New Covenant. We are no longer bound by them, but the emphasis is now on the Message of the Cross. Once someone sincerely accepts Christs sacrifice, then they are set free from their former sin nature, and given the Holy Spirit. Now we are to be propelled by the actual love of Christ, in which He died for us, to obey the commandments because of His guidance. That is the beauty of the Cross, that is the Power of the Blood. If anyone attempts to obey the Law because of dedication, they will only realize how much power their sin has over them, and become more aware of the sin sickness which wars agianst their soul. That is why Christ came, that we would be set free from that sin sickness which is at war agianst our soul. Therefore, it is not by works, lest any man should boast, but Salvation is based soully on God's mercy and grace. All we are required to do is simply; repent, believe, be baptized (water and the Holy Ghost), and we are on our way to a Holy Ghost inspired mission from the Kingdom. God's grace is amazing, and irrevocable. Glory to the King of kings, and to the Lord of lords, whose Name is above every name.

the ten commandments are part of our history.  the USA was built around them and so was the constitution.  We welcome everyone and allow everyone to establish thier own religion, however we are who we are.  Americans welcome everyone but just because we have alot of immigrants are americans no longer the foundation.  Well, the ten commandments are also the foundation.  Our plede even refers to GOD.  no you don't have to like it, you can leave.  thats you freedom the the USA gives you.  I say we don't let everyone elso take away us that are true to heart and the meaning of "America" let everyone take that form us.

Can you explain how our Constitution is based on the 10 Commandments when it doesn't bother to mention them nor your god and even contradicts them.

To simply hang the 10 commandments on a wall for people to read is not enough, people need to understand why these laws could benifit them and how to implement them in their lives, and the whole of the hebrew scriptures shows the benifits and the disasters.

hello, my name is jill, my ID susfubb, my current vitals 52/F/San Diego CA. I would like to join in the current debate, but it is difficult to  reply to "guest." Worse yet is bothering to disentangle whether guest #17, author of message on fri may 16 -02:06AM also wrote message on  wed apr 30 -3:29PM.

on 2nd thought, best forget that last post i mentioned. in all probability it is a ridiculously childish attempt to belittle a known/unknown other using spurious accusations in the current slang of the bigoted redneck & uneducated dogmatic radical.

whether  'josh is gay' is no concern of mine nor anyone else except for josh. in fact, if true, i wish all the best in life and much power to josh.  actually,

**10 commandments? how were these separated from the multitude of biblical commandments throughout exodus & leviticus - including "the first offspring from every womb belongs to Me" - for sacrifice Ex 34:19??

here is an email i sent to another, more intelligent guest who felt the **"10 Commandments" should be reserved for home & church.

sorry delay - i just joined & read your message. hopefully your energy is restored and you are on the activist trail again!

my opinion is that the 10 Commandments have little or no place in public schools. religious messages have many proper locations - in church, home, and private organizations - but not in public schools.

do not mistake my intent - i believe basic ethics DO have a place in all these locations. if a religious theme must be stressed, please let it be a secular version of the Golden Rule - treat others as you wish to be treated.

personally, i think the schools would achieve much more to help children by being completely honest and open - never hiding the facts or truth due to any agenda, religion, or motive. biological function is not something to be ashamed of - nor should children get that message from its omission throughout schooling.

furthermore, i think cognitive science methods of reviewing one's mind contents (implanted beliefs & the daily unnoticed thought chatter that supports them) should be standard K-12. our societies have been not only totally remiss in this area, they have made looking into our own minds TABOO - what if one explores and finds insanity - GASP!

how else is a child (or adult) to understand how life experience, lousy teachers' propoganda, relatives' twisted ideas have shaped his/her own present neuroses/ psychoses?

next in importance is training our children in basic finance management. kids raised in households ignorant of budgeting, savings, and investments have no way of knowing that this is a missing element in their education. unfortunately, the majority of households either withhold all such information from kids, or haven't a clue.

ALL children, just as a starter, should know this: if they put $50/month into savings (cutting lawns, allowance, babysitting, begging from grandma) beginning at age 8... even if they quit at $3000 in the bank (age 13), they will be millionaires if that account is never touched until retirement. the sooner savings (rather than instant gratification) begin, the greater the reward.

see my next post for my opinions on sex education LOL  ~jill

my opinions on sex education, both at home & in school:

at the git-go, whenever a child asks about any fact of life, s/he should be answered with nothing but truth and proper anatomical terms (!) until tse curiosity is satisfied. no need to go into details for which the the child is not ready or did not request. when the questions reach the level of 'how are human babies made?'  or 'how did i get in your uterus, mom?' then it is time to be both truthful and gentle, without phrasing the facts in cold, hard language likely to shock, but with the same thoughtful love involved in planned conception & parenthood.  family religious values can be added or subtracted from the following examples:

first, the child should have discovered, or been made aware that the male/female of different (sexual) species (including humans) have a few different organs, features. From there it is easy: male/female, men/women are made inside-out from each other  so that when they are grown-ups they can fit together lovingly in a special way. (perhaps give age-appropriate & non-sexist examples the child will immediately understand as equal in importance like: finger/glove, foot/shoe, plug/drain,  piston/cylinder, hose-couplings, etc.) this is how a baby can be made IF the partners agree.

later:
~as the child asks more questions, more details can be filled in. simple first: not every 'fitting together' makes a baby. in fact, it can be prevented in several ways we will teach you as your body grows up.

~mother nature/ our bodies/ G*d/ evolution, etc. has made "fitting together," called 'making love, or having sex (etc.), a VERY pleasurable activity, which is prompted by an urge called 'instinct.' this makes sense, because without babies, humans & other animals would quickly become extinct - there would no longer be any people or higher forms of life on earth.

~until both you & your (potential) partner know the possible consequences involved, and agree your minds and bodies are ready (or are married), it is irresponsible and can be hurtful to engage in sexual activity.

~ there are other reasons for 'making love' that are also very important. among these are sharing the enjoyment with & learning respect for your partner, which helps make a close bond that will cement your future decision to make & raise children.

later:
~STDs & BC

~the urge/instinct to mate is a very strong one, and that is why we are having this discussion as you approach adulthood. you now know about the prevention of pregnancy & possible spread of disease, & understand the absolute need for mutual respect, consideration, and attention to the emotional/ physical needs/ wants of partners.

~this instinct to reproduce ourselves with children is shared with all living creatures. it is similar to the urge/instinct to eat - we all get an URGE to eat (hunger), which helps us to survive. same with thirst, keeping warm/ making shelters, having to urinate, move one's bowels, or finding help when injured/ in pain. unlike people who have lived in cities for a long time, wild animals are more attuned to their bodily urges, rhythms, and natural environment. they know instinctively when & where to find lots of fresh water, healing herbs to eat (you have seen rover eat grass, son), how to rest for the body to heal, etc..

~our instincts (mother nature, G*d, etc.) were never meant to make us feel guilty. never let anyone tell you that the enjoyment of sexual intercourse between responsible, consenting adults should make you or anyone feel shame or guilt in any way for any reason. other than not honoring your partner/s, among those who share sexual relations enjoyably, guilt is unnatural, unneeded, and unhealthy. if guilt is felt, either respect was not mutual, or it is imposed from the outside by someone not taught to understand the above.

~too often in these times that are supposed to be modern, progressive, & enlightened, those with religious agendas try to force guilt on innocent others. these think they have the "only truth," when in "truth" all they have is superstition unsupported by fact. their "faith" involves accusations of "sin" for blameless enjoyment. ignore these sorts, my wondrous daughter, and understand that they are captives of their  own fears.

~ a grown-up couple decides together when they want to make  children. this is when they both agree they're ready in every way to stay together so they can have & support a baby. then they stop preventing & start trying to conceive - all with love.

~respect for one's partner is tops in my book ;).   ~jill

Evolution IS a faith, there is no fossil evidence for evolution, the fossil record that Darwin was depending on to prove his theory are a joke! show me one missing link! there isnt one! Atheists relly on faith where their facts fall short. Come on thistown, even Dsa agrees on this point.
___

Archaeopteryx

Archaeopteryx is a what is called a transitional fossil. A fossil that shows evidence of one species evolving into another, or at the very least of having the same parent species. This is a transitional fossil between the dinosaur and the bird.

There are others. I am a bit of a palentology buff.

I do believe God sparked life, but life has done many things since - and one of those things is EVOLVE. He does amazing work.

And NO, the 10 Commandments have no business being hung up in public schools. Those who want their children to know them should teach them at home.

No, the Ten Commandments, nor any religious doctrine for that matter, do not belong in public schools, court houses, or any government sanctioned and/or federally sponsored establishment. As I am a non-Christian, displaying them where I have to see them, or implying that a person or persons employed by the government & in charge of things that may affect me directly (i.e. a judge, teacher, etc.) is ethically and/or religiously biased by them is a blatant violation of my rights.
Religion of any stripe has no business in the public square.
As for evolution, evolution is a scientific theory, pure & simple. It has nothing whatsoever to do with religion. It is, at this point, the only definitive explanation of the origin of species that makes any logical sense & has actual evidence to support it. That is why it is taught in schools. Creationism is religious, particularly Christian religious, dogma, & it should not be taught in public schools.
Also, the whole bit about Darwin supposedly recanting his research on his deathbed is nothing more than a hoax. Do some research & find out for yourself. As for the questions referring to the Salem Witch Trials, yes, they did actually happen.  No real witches were killed, but many Christians accused of witchcraft were. There are legal death records. Check them out.

I certainly believe that we all have a freedom of religion, but we're not guaranteed freedom FROM religion.  The issue is, why can't they have the ten commandments in a public school or any other religious documents?  People say, 'I think it's okay to do that, but they should put all religion stuff on the walls if they do that.'  But what about religions such as Satanism, should we expose students to religions that promote violence?

I can sum it all up in a paragraph:

We need to stop asking aND  debating "why not" to the question of why can't we put religious documents and word up in schools, but ask WHY do people need it in a school?  It'd seem so much better if there was no religious information in school because nobody has any reason to complain if it isn't. If people need it up there so bad they need to just find a private religious school to send their kid to, even though they can get pricey.

And, by the way, people say this country was "founded on Christianity".  True the religion most people practiced was Christianity, but the FOUNDING FATHERS of this country were mostly deists (with a few exceptions).  Deism being the belief, based solely on reason, in a God who created the universe and then abandoned it, assuming no control over life, exerting no influence on natural phenomena, and giving no supernatural revelation.

Just to let you all know it is now legal to post the Ten Commandments in the public school through the Christian Club. How do I know this? Because I foght for over 1 1/2 years facing expulsion and arrest over "seperation of church and state" (which is never even mentioned in the constitution!). So now they are next to the entrance in the library. I am not forcing religion down anyone's mouth. Im just exercissing my right as an American, and am expressing what my moral values are. By the way if anyone in the school such as the Gay Striaght Alliance wanted to post their beliefs on sexuality, it would be perfectly fine. I think perhaps that "tolerance" has now found equalibrium.
