I found a link that states that the word that is translated as fornication or sexual immorality in some versions of the Bible is porneia. Porneia is actually temple prostitution and was condemned because it involved the worship of false gods. www.libchrist.com/bible/immoral.html
In the middle ages, it was common for Catholic priests to have many wives and mistresses. In 1022 Pope Benedict VIII banned marriages and mistresses for priests. This was to ensure that when the priests died that the Catholic church would inherit their possessions. There would be no children around to inherit the priests' possessions. It was all about money.

How do you feel about people like Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon in the Old Testament? They all had multiple wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines(mistresses).

"Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines(mistresses)." He must've been busy.

because all those things are non-consentual and exploitative. that should be what defines immorality. the harm to others and the disregard for the sovereignty of another person. of course i am biased, cause i am a sodomite!

but the fact is you can use common sense and observation to get everyone to agree about the obvious immorality of the above sexual acts. to call homosexuality immoral you MUST use a circular logic that is easily debunked. how is homosexuality non-consentual or exploitative? how is harmful? AIDS? that is not inherent to homosexuality, but rather is a social problem that can be resolved short of erasing homosexuality (besides there are more heteros with AIDS than homosexuals). does it degrade the morality of society? well, that is the most common circular logic used. u can't say something is immoral because it reduces morality because in order to show how it reduces morality u must say it is immoral. totally circular.

ok, is adultery immoral? i would say yes. you are betraying the trust of your spouse and maybe hurting children too. i understand people can't help who they fall in love with but u should be responsible enough to end things first. i say that as someone who has cheated before (once). i learned my lesson. actually, i was forgiven...go figure.

ok, prostitution? immoral? this one is a tough one for me. it surely is consentual, and my gut tells me there is no reason why u can't barter yer own body. athletes do. but it is exploitative right? i mean, the customer exploits the economic situation of the prostitute, and probably facilitates the continuation of their exploitation. then again, commerce is always exploitation. and the prostitute (assuming she/he is of consentual age) ALWAYS has an alternative. it is a choice for them in a way so far removed from rape or molestation that it cannot be considered in the same vein.

ok, promiscuity? i think it is irresponisble, but I don't think it is immoral. it can lead to disease, unwanted pregnancy, etc., but to call it immoral is using the word too loosely. not everything that is stupid and/or reckless is immoral. i think immorality involves a real lack of human compassion. immorality is a crime against empathy. that's all for now...

A lot of people would argue that the problem is not prostitution but the problem is making prostitution illegal. If prostitution is legal then the government can regulate it and control it. In the legal brothels of Nevada, for example, prostitutes are required by law to be given regular STD tests. The police keep a very close watch on legal brothels and make sure there are no violations such as hiring a girl under 18 years of age. We don't punish consenting adults who engage in sex. Then why should consenting adults be punished for having sex when money is involved?  Ann Landers was in favor of legalizing prostitution. A man wrote into Ann Landers and said, "I believe it is an outrage that a woman whose only crime is making men happy for a fee should go to jail. Something is wrong with a society that thinks that way." Click on the following link to read more.

To get the definition of that first you would need to understand:

Ammoral: One  who know's better but who's heart chooses not to turn away from something that would, could, or can harm him/her, in the long run. (That could could be in or out of marraige)

Immoral:One who know better but does't alway's turn away from the moral/what might be the right way of living.

Is there a standard? I think you could set  a few guidlines, other than that, we as a culture need understand that if something offends one i.e. such as your wife refrain. you could and will lead them into temtation.
