A person has the right to avoid discrimination and to protect their self-esteem. Identifying as a member of a discriminated ethnic group could entail negative repercussions in terms of both self-esteem and prejudice. It follows that a person is not obligated to identify as a member of a discriminated group, even if that person really is a member.

So if the person denies the truth about himself (being part of {ethnic group of choice}) then his self-esteem will go up?  I'm honestly not following what you're trying to say.

Yeah, I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean either. Sure, a person can incorrectly disassociate themselves from their associated group, but that doesn't seem to be the core of that person's self-esteem issues if that's what they choose to do.

Take Rosa Parks for example. The facts about the Montgomery Bus Boycott  that day are that she was not only very proud of her ethnicity, but also had the inner strength to make a stand when racial discrimination was imposed onto her life. In my opinion, that says more for her self-esteem than disassociating from her ethnicity, wouldn't you say? She's got a great story. Read up on it: rosa parks facts
