everyone faces discrimination.

religion, color, ideas, what have you.

when will affirmative action end? we talk
about equalizing the playing field but when
will it end?

if african americans are so bad off here,
why don't they go back to africa? in fact,
today they benefit from being members
of the united states. try living in africa,
then come talk to me.

why is most crimes proportional committed
by african americans?

why are major african american cities
such as detroit slums?

what happens, if say, the 1% of the usa
which are rich white, continue to marry
only whites... when hispanics & african
americans become the majority, will
poor whites become eligable for affirmative
action?

why is it that most race crimes are actually
committed by african americans?

i think the structural problems are in fact
not that african americans are black, but
instead that a dispropotional number are
poor. therefore, why don't we address
this issue by raising the standard of living
for ALL americans? not just the black ones?

lastly, private institutions like yale can admit
whoever they want. i don't care. public
institutions should be fair. they should only
admit the best students. they are being
subsidized by the state.

the idea that affirmative action does not
discriminate against white students is wrong.
it does. it also reinforces hatred, and implies
that african americans couldn't make it on their
own.

further, it gloats that this is somehow a way
to achieve equality. well,  it only envokes hatred from many.

i come from an inter-racial family.

maybe if black kids did their homework
instead of wearing their hats backwards
and playing basketball all the time
they could speak english and get an
education.

i wonder what blacks would think if
whites sued to be represented on major
basketball teams, after all, maybe if my
ancestors were slaves they would be
stronger and more athletic?

eat my nuts racists. treat everyone equally.
if you are discriminated against sue.
that is the american way

Blacks landed on the shores of VA at the same time that the settlers did... so... What r u talking about... go back to Africa!!!....

Also ... †it's so funny that people make such negative statements about black American culture...
our culture and our music is copied and loved all around the world...
I definitely think that's something to be proud of... so please... †stop hating...

I love coming to this site because I get to see how truly bigotted and racist people are...

Behind the veils of anonymity... you feel free to be honest about how you really feel about blacks... and I think that's healthy .... we need more honesty on this issue... to understand what people's true motivations are when they say they are again Affirmative Action...

We know you are racist ... we know by and large you either hate us directly or don't understand us... .... But... so what...

I hope we get to a point in history where no matter how much you hate us... we can still live and thrive... That's what America is really about... and...
that's what really counts...

Also, I don't think Black people should  have to defend themselves against allegations that we are inherently crimminal... Any group of people living in poor communities with high unemployment and other social problems ... tend to have a high crime rates.... You can look at Russia and all over Europe for examples of this...

So it's not the color of our skin that makes us have problems with crime in poor communities... it's the social conditions...

And if you are truly concerned about that... and if that's something that you would like to change then ...you would support Affirmative Action... The crime rate in and of it's self is evidence that... we need many more educational opportunities.... I think you proved my point better than I could have...
Although I'm †sure that wasn't you objective...

blacks have made an enormous impact on american culture. for example, did you know that rock and roll would never exist if it were not for black people? americans would still be listening to classical music. the fact is, blacks invented jazz music, which turned into rock and roll, which turned into the varieties of popular music we have today (rock, punk, rap, metal, pop, hardcore, etc)

I never said that we want special treatment for our contributions... I was simply reacting to your statements which are very racist... that we have made no contribution to American Society...
you are very prejudiced... not because you disagree with me but because you even feel the need to say things like this:

if african americans are so bad off here,
why don't they go back to africa? in fact,
today they benefit from being members
of the united states. try living in africa,
then come talk to me.

why is most crimes proportional committed
by african americans?

why are major african american cities
such as detroit slums?

What do these statements above have to do with the debate about Affirmative action?
They don't.

Are you attacking blacks or attacking Affirmative Action by making these statements?...
Do you need help with that answer...?

You were attacking blacks... which means that your problems with Affirmative Action go a little deeper than a disagreement about †the merits of a †government program...
You have a lot of prejudices about blacks...
Which is your right...

But don't call be a liar when I say you are a racist...

Now Back the question by the other Guest....

I think we should address class issues separately from race issues..

I am all for that..

I think race issues separate the interests of poor whites.... and blacks ... †
when we share a †lot of common difficulties and common goals..
but of course like crabs in a †barrel many people don't realize that their is enough opportunity for everyone...
so they fight over the scraps instead of insisting for a larger piece of the American pie...

You guys need a history lesson...

Affirmative Action was created to right a wrong prepetrated by the US Government...

The government †of the United States of America, a free country, supported legalized racism...
the government supported.... it... and enforced it by law and by force ...for centuries in America...

That's why we have Affirmative Action...

It was the easiest and cheapest way to make up for centuries of wrong doings..by our government... which affected the lives of †millions of AMERICAN CITIZENS...
I repeat ...CENTURIES...of wrong... by the government....

I think the Government Got off easy.. Don't you?

I think Black's deserve something a lot greater than Aff. Action... for all the suffering we have endored in this country...  at the hands of our government... a government which was created to protect every citizen's right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness...

I find it funny when people say that Blacks should stop complaining about racism and slavery because every nationaliy has had it bad in our country...

These sentiments are true but you fail to address one key difference... THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED LEGALIZED RACISM.... BONDAGE AND DESCRIMINATION...

when it came to blacks...

If you were a polish American and someone burned down your house because they hated you... you could call the police... and if the person was caught... they would have been put in jail...

Blacks were not protected under the law....infact the law said that we were 3/4 †of a person... we weren't even counted as human beings .. under the law... we couldn't vote although we paid taxes... ... †The US GOVERNMENT gave everyone the right to victimize us.... and the government gave us no legal recourse...
So that's the difference...

That's what we "complain" about and that's †what we have had to overcome... †

I think you guys need a serious history lesson...

And we aren't complaing about something that happened centuries ago... it's only been forty years since we have ended †LEGALIZED RACISM in this country... ... †which was a system established by our "founding fathers"...

---
All that kill whitey stuff... please ... spare me.... the truth is the truth...

But I don't endorse killing anyone.... ..

I'll leave that to all of you...HATERS † and WAR MONGERS....

I don't believe in an eye for an eye...

I †believe in god so I know that justice will always be served in the end ...

I am simply trying to point out that many of you need to re-evaluate †your thinking about these issues....

Aasha, you're being obtuse about the issue at hand. The fact is Affermative Action is just reverse racism. Let me say I have plenty of black friends, some of whom I trained proudly beside in basic training for the Army Infantry. If a black man doesn't get a job because he's black, it's called discrimination. But if a white man doesn't get a job because he's white, it's called reperations (aka affermative action). I agree that racism, to a small extent is still a problem in our country. That is to say, it's nowhere near where it was, but it still is, and will unfortuantly most likely always be present to some extent. What we need to do is deal with the issue of racism. But we're not dealling with the problem, we're dealing with the symtoms. If a black teenager is applying at a college and doesn't have good enough credentials, he can still get admited instead of a more deserving white. I know alot of black people who have earned their way into college and on to a wonderfully successful carreer. Why can't all minorities do the same? What happened to our country? It used to be, that if you didn't get a job, or didn't get into college, you worked a little harder, got better, developed more experience and tried again. But this country as a whole, blacks, whites everyone, is looking for the easy way. I say EVERYONE needs to quit looking for who owes them what, and concentrate on what they can EARN for themselves.

Sorry I didn't have the time nor the patience to read all that is written on this subject. Please be patient if I bring up old arguments but I think I bring up things that many of you don't understand.

First off let me address the fact that I'm a conservative for Affirmative Action. Second that I'm a first generation immigrant and I'm not white.

Now first off they shouldn't call it affirmative action but affirmative consideration. It's in consideration that so many minorities have suffered in the past that they are trying to amend. Words have a strong power on people's emotions and I think that if we would use the right words then it would have a better effect.

Something that people don't know and don't understand is how it feels to be a minority in the US. If you are a minority you are more familiar with the "white culture" then "whites" are of ours. The fact that you think social or economic class is the same for all races shows how much we need to diversify universities. The fact of the matter you will never know how much bias, discrimination, and racism exists in America today. It isn't even close to the levels that it was in the 60's but it still exists. The purpose to diversify is to help counteract some of that. If you don't believe there is any racism, bias, or prejudice in America then you are proof of the need for diversity.

Another reason we need diversity is because the belief is how do we help correct social injustices of the past and not punishing those of the current system. Allowing a few people in because of their race would only eliminate approximately 5% of all applicants. Applicants on the borderline that would have been accepted if not for the diversity policies. The belief is that if the social injustices of the past had not happened that those students would have had better resources and lesser disadvantges and would merit acceptance. That if the past injustices had not happened they would have been that much farther ahead and then have "merited" acceptance and those students eliminated would have been eliminated anyways.

Also standardized tests are racially, culturally, and genderally bias. Until recently most standardized test were made of entirely white males. That is why women in general don't do as well on standardized tests as men overall. If there was a group of people raised, educated, cultured, the same as me and we created a test, who do you think of all the test takers would do the best? Probably those that did have the same background as I did. How do you overcome differences like that?

Why do Professors want participation from everyone in the class? Everyone has different points of view. If you admitted only a few merit based minorities then the campus wouldn't be very diverse. That means that class discussions would mostly be by people that are the same race, culture, color, and probably similar backgrounds. How much perspective would you gain then? When would they ever become educated about "other cultures" or people? Being a minority we bring something with us that whites would bring to a African, Asian, South American, and Pacific Island dominant setting. If you don't understand that, just skip the rest of my post.

Now to address the success rates of minorities in universities. If you accept a more "merit based" pool of applicants into a school compared to a pool of people that were accepted less on the merits of course there is a huge disparity between minorities suceeding (a merit based process). It does not mean all accepted that do not make the "merit" requirements are not qualified. There are some that do get accepted that cannot handle the competitiveness and should not have been accepted. I concede that. The fact is that many that are accepted merit based drop out as well so numbers are not a good indicator. The fact of the matter many are accepted even though there scores didn't merit it. They do suceed and add to the school. Also statistically the pool is much smaller. So every drop out affects the statistics dramatically. It can be very misleading due to the size of the pool compared to the larger pool. Everyone knows the larrger the pool the more accurate the statistic. Also who do you think is more prepared for college the students that are second, third, fourth, fifth generation college student that have a family support group or the ones that come from a first generation college family? How do you think it feels to live away from home in a predominantly white area when you're not white? We have to learn a whole new culture and many times language. We have to learn to adapt to teachers mentality that may not be able to follow our mentatlity because they weren't raised the same as us. Unless you have lived in a different culture that isn't white you wouldn't understand further proving my point for the need of diversity.

I won't go into the economic and disadvantaged backgrounds that many minorities face. I believe that those are pretty evident. There are my views I have many more but I'll give them after because I'm tired of typing. Oh yeah sorry for the typos but I'm not a perfectionist. You know what I mean and that is enough.

I'd like to add something here that people seem to ignore. It's claimed that black people came over in slave ships. This is true, however, what isn't known is that there were blacks who didn't arrive in slave ships. They came with whalers. So does the logic behind Affirmative Action comply here?

Injustices against minorities are mentioned implying that all white people are evil demons, but does anyone know that racism is universal. The chinese, even before contact with the west, were (and are) arrogant and racist. The same could be said of arabs, indians, etc.

So seeing that humanity, as a whole, is a cesspool, does Affirmative Action really help?

"I'd like to add something here that people seem to ignore. It's claimed that black people came over in slave ships. You need to research just a little mroe before you put up something you know nothing baout. Affirmative considertaion is for all minorities. It's not limited to blacks. It also applies to women in some cases. It's meant to even out the hundreds of years of inequities between minorities and their oppressors. Until 30 yrs ago it was legal to discriminate. So affirmative consideration is to help all minorities to gain what they had been deprived of for so long.

"Injustices against minorities are mentioned implying that all white people are evil demons, but does anyone know that racism is universal. The chinese, even before contact with the west, were (and are) arrogant and racist. The same could be said of arabs, indians, etc."

The inequities of the past aare not implying that all white people are evil demons. Its saying that many white people and the system that they established deprived Americans of their rights for hundreds of years. Its true that even today there is racism outside of America. We can't interfere with other countries foreign affairs. We can make things right here at home. Just becasue you can't win all lawsutis doesn't mean that every lawsuit should be dismissed".

"So seeing that humanity, as a whole, is a cesspool, does Affirmative Action really help?"

It does help because it fixes the inequities of Americans, it also helps to prove that America is not a cess pool any longer.

One thing that we have to realize is that Affirmative action's purpose was to prevent employers from denying someone a job, that was more qualified, because of his/or her minority disposition.
It seems that there is alot of miss information about the purpose of affirmative action. IT is not a regulator for how many minorities you have, but It does force employers to hire the best man for the job and not eliminating him or her becuase of the sex or race.

Isn't giving the blacks and other minorities those "advatages", especially in the college school system, saying, you can get in over this person, even if their eductional credentials are higher than yours, b/c you are considered a minority... doesn't that really say, we know you are more stupid than this person, and we feel sorry for you, so we are going to let you in b/c of that.  Doesn't this counrty say we "ARE ALL EQUAL"?  And the Bible say's we are all equal also.  Why are we accpting and declining people from schools and job based on race or sex.  Why can't it all be based on your effort and grades?  If you are smart and can do that kind of work.. you get in.  If not, sorry.  Everyone has the same chance to make someone of them.  Read D'Souza's book Illiberal Education for furture info about the AA if college campus.  It's really interesting.

This comes from the leader of the black civil rights.  How in any way does affirmative action hold up this dream.  Affirmative action was meant to be a temporary solution to the problem.  It was instated over 25 years ago, it hasn't helped yet so why do we continue to use it.  If anything it hurts society, it grants the black community (among others) a handicap, teaching them that they won't have to work as hard to get the same outcome as a white person.  Affirmative action creates more of a problem by causing reverse discrimination, and consequently making otherwise regular white kids racist.

aff action is inherently flawed
how can a society that's trying to get rid of racial issues turn right around and base stuff on race?

oh yeah, in terms of college.... last time i checked, ASIANS were a minority
how the hell do we not get any slack?
is this aff action going backwards?
like i said, aff action is flawed

Is Affirmative action right? no. It's wrong.

First of all, blacks are not the only people who have faced oppression and humiliation in the nation. Sure, they've had their share. But the Irish were discriminated against, and they were WHITE. The Japanese were sent to camps in World War II and they were ASIAN. In fact, here in California, Asians were probably more discriminated against than blacks (no yelling, please, if this assumption is wrong). So why do blacks (as well as native Americans and Latinos) get the special treatment because of "oppression"? I donít know. Itís more "politically correct" oppression.

And the argument "well these minorities are underprivileged) is nonsense as well. Not all blacks/Latinos/native Americans are poor, and not are poor people belong to one of these minorities. There are plenty of poor whites/Asians, as well as wealthy blacks/Latinos/Native Americans.

I think the only argument for affirmative action that has credibility is the belief that schools must be diverse. However, how can anyone appreciate diversity if he or she feels it was accomplished through "reverse discrimination"? If anything, affirmative action divides us further.

This is all wrong for many reasons every body is equal ecording to the constitution, but there are many cases where nobody "uses" this minorities already get college schaller ships just for having a different cultural back groundWhy should "minorities" have a better chance to get a job if the people they are going against other applicants that have a higher education and work ethics??

(Not saying minorities don't have high educations/work ethics)

[color=red]WOW MOST OF YOU GUYS ARE VERY BIASED AND DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.

EVERY IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL HAS A MAJORITY OF WHITE PEOPLE. YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY? BECAUSE COLLEGE IS ALL ABOUT MONEY. YEA THATS RIGHT: MONEY. THE MAJORITY OF AMERICA IS WHITE. DONT YOU GET IT? THERE ARE MORE POOR MINORITIES THAN POOR WHITE PEOPLE. HOW MANY WHITE PEOPLE ARE POOR?? I BET I COULD COUNT WITH MY FINGERS... THE POINT IS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION BALANCES IT OUT. MOST WHITE PEOPLE JUST PAY THEIR WAY INTO COLLEGE. IS THAT FAIR?? NO. BUT YOU SEE THATS WHY WE HAVE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. ONE DAY WE WILL NOT NEED AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, BUT FOR NOW WE DO BECAUSE SCHOOLS ARE NOT DIVERSE ENOUGH YET. STILL TODAY MOST WHITE PEOPLE GET INTO COLLEGE SO WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING? LET TIME HEAL ALL THINGS AND IM JUST SORRY YOU HAD TO BE BORN DUING THESE TIMES WHEN YES THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO SET CERTAIN QUOTAS SO IT FAVORS THE FUTURE. YOU GUYS DONT UNDERSTAND AYTHING ABOUT THE UNITED STATES ECONOMY AND EXPRESS YOURSELF AS IF YOU WERE RACIST. I AM JUST SPEAKING THE TRUTH.
ALSO HAVE YOU SEEN SCHOOLS IN SOME AREAS? THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT FUND THEM ENOUGH. ALL THESE WHITE PEOPLE HAVE MONEY TO GO TO NICE PRIVATE SCHOOLS WHEN THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT FUNDING OTHER PUBLIC SCHOOLS EQUALLY. WE DO NOT HAVE EUAL EDUCATION. NONE OF YOU UNDERSTAND THIS? STOP BEING RACIST AND START OPENING YOUR EYES. STOP HATIN AND GETTING ANGRY AND THINK ABOUT SOLUTIONS.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANCESTORS, JUST MONEY! AMERICA IS A CAPITALIST COUNTRY...

BY THE WAY FOR THE PEOPLE THAT DIDNT EVEN READ MY WHOLE MESSAGE, MY MAIN POINT IS THAT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IS NEEDED RIGHT NOW... AND NO NOT TO FEEL INFERIOR OR LIKE A CHARITY CASE.

I THINK THAT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IS A BAD DEAL.  I AM A MINORITY AND I DONT BELIEVE IN THIS PROGRAM.  I DONT WANT WHAT I HAVENT EARNED AND ACCOMPLISHED BY MERIT.  AS A WISE MAN ONCE SAID...I WOULD RATHER BE JUDGED BY THE CONTENT OF MY CHARACTER THEN THE COLOR OF MY SKIN.

The definition of discrimination is - treating one person unfairly over another according to factors unrelated to their ability or potential, such as age, disability, sex, or national origin.

Affirmative Action is ironicly defined in the exact same manner.

Discrimination to deter discrimination doesn't seem like the brightests of plans

First, I'd like to say that I'm a student at the University of Michigan, and I've seen first hand the effects of affirmative action. I am convinced that affirmative action is an aweful policy than hurts everyone. On one hand, you have underqualified white people getting rejected (point has been made many times in this thread, so I won't hammer it), then, you get hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for minority scholarships just my university alone. Unfortunately, the vast majority of students admitted because of AA are failing classes, and recieving extremely low marks. AA is hurting them! You take people who haven't read a book in their life, and expect them to compete with students who actually work for their accomplishments! Instead, most just party through.

Guest: There is something called a student loan. There are already WAY too many minorities going to college not to learn, but just because they can...with your taxdollars.

Also, Affirmative Action is a direct violation of the civil rights act of 1964. It is illegal to give preference due to race, gender, religion, etc.

Well, there isn't much to say here that hasn't already been said.  Those--including John Kerry--that believe this country still has "a long way to go" to stop discrimination based on ethnicity/color/race/what have you may have good intentions, but are only prolonging it.  The longer we instill AA in schools, the longer blacks and other races/ethnicities will maintain a stereotype of "not wanting to work" for their accomplishments.  Whether a black female actually sweats blood for straight-A's in high school or not, she'll be viewed as a "slacker" by her peers in college, or, if not that, it will be thought "well, she got in because of AA."  If we *really* wanted to discontinue the "racism" going on in this country, we'd put a stop to reverse discrimination practices such as AA.
