1st Amendment-Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Okay... so... if we are supposed to have free speech, why aren't we getting it?

During the 2000 election, Al Gore visited my city to rally supporters for the election. Yet... people who were wearing Ralph Nader shirts, buttons, etc., and carrying signs supporting the Green Party got kicked out by the police (I was a witness). If this isn't a violation of the First Amendment, what is? Sure, I was in 6th grade when I was a witness of this and didn't really think about the legal side of this, but, now, as an 8th grader, I understand a lot more about how serious what went on really was.

Basically, how can the Government think they have the right to do this?! Who ever put them above the laws?

No but they sure have better grammer.

Secondly Miss 8th grader, your example is rather naive. There are some instances where freedom of speech has been repressed at the very least, but how far does your freedom go? Does your right to free speech give you the right to yell at someone when they don't want to hear you? Of course not. All of your "Inalienable Human Rights" (as presented in the Constitution of the United States of America and in the Decleration of Independance) are PERSONAL freedom. The line is drawn when your freedom interferes with the freedom of others. In your example, the supporters of the Green Party (I assume) where there to protest against gore (which I don't really understand since Gore is a complete pinky leftist) and that infringed on the rights of the Gore supporters to assemble peacefully (also in your first ammendment). Does that make sense to you?

You have a good point StormCrow, but, still...can't people assemble for their own beliefs? Also, guest, I agree with him- they have MUCH better grammer than you! And, StormCrow, I sort of resent what you called me. I don't think that being an 8th grader has made me 10 times smarter, but 8th grade was where we studied the constitution a lot more than in other years, which is why I didn't think on it much as a 6th grader.

Also, the Nader protesters weren't being dangerous and violent! So, why kick them out? They were letting the meeting be basically peaceful. When Gore was talking, they were being quiet, but they still were kicked out!

Also, of course my example seems naive to someone who's over 20! (I saw your profile) You've seen more of the world than I have! Still, that comment of yours did hurt my feelings a bit. I'm not asking for an apology, but, please think about what you're writing!

You were a real jerk to Inu-Yasha-Girl, StormCrow. I think she was right. Gore is not a leftist at all. You could almost say that he was republican. He is better than Bush, but not by alot!

You Go Inu-Yasha-Girl! You shouldn't back down. You obviously know more about politics than StormCrow does!

StormCrow you are really out of it! What do you do all day? Play paintball?

I think we need to be able to protest whenever we want, wherever we want and about whatever we want. I live in Madison too. The Nader protesters were not being violent or causing more problems than the Gore protesters.

First Inu Yasha Girl, I appologize, for pointing out that you're an 8th grader. You certainly seem very intelligent for someone your age, you're smarter than some of the people my age. I'm not at all saying that i'm more intelligent or experienced than you. My point is that we're both young, and we both have alot to learn. I mean't no offense. But honestly, I assumed  you were a girl because, well, look at your name, it's a safe assumption.

People can most certainly assemble for whatever beliefs they have. But they cannot infringe on the rights of others. For example, christians have no business being at a muslim mosque (unless it's honestly to learn, or convert). If the Nader supporters were being quiet (ie. not booing and jeering, or causing a general rucus) then why were they there? Obviously Gore's security people aren't going to throw out people who are interested in listening to Gore speak.

Lady Aerin- people can and do protest constantly. I look at the most recent protests against the war in Iraq and can't help but think that anyone who was opposed to Operation Iraqi Freedom is the exact reason why people dislike america, because they see us as selfish, bull headed rich people, who don't understand the freedom we have. It's funny how people all across the world protested the war in Iraq, but the people of Iraq welcomed american soldiers as the liberators their proving to be. Even the French recanted and said that America did the right thing. In closing to you, believe me I'm NOT trying to stick up for Algore.

Guest- I'm honestly tempted to not reply at all to your overwhelming ignorance. Gore isnt' a leftist huh? That's funny, he's pro choice, pro affermative action, pro enviromentalism, pro gun ban do I need to keep going? He's not extreme left, but he's about as close as has ever run for pressident. I agree you could almost say he WAS a republican. If you look into Gore's political history, you'll find he used to be entirely pro life, and had alot of other very conservative views. That all changed of course when he ran as Clinton's VP and then as the democratic nominee for president. For someone who's judging how much I understand of politics you're rather lacking yourself, all proven by you're Gore comments, and your comparison of him to George W Bush.

well I don't want you to think that the argument is of a personal nature. People like the guest here who claims Algore isn't a leftist frustrate me alot, and when he further pushes on to tell me I'm outside the loop on politics, it takes a good deal of control on my part. Anyways, again, you seem very intelligent and I'd be happy to debate or explain anything else with/against you.

LOL, I didn't see it so much of an argument. It was more of an explenation. Except for the one shining ball of intelligence that claims algore isn't a left wing liberal.

StormCrow, I was reading your reply and those of others, and I was thinking of way to state how I felt.  Your writing was exactly on point and  was thorough.
