In class a group did a presentation on gay marriage. But instead of the usual argument on whether or not it should be allowed they talked about possibly making a new name for the word "marriage" for gay/lesbian couples. According to the dictionary and religious beliefs marriage is the joining of a man and a woman. So why not create a word for gays/lesbians? What are your thoughts on this?

Here in the UK we have Civil Partnerships for gay couples, which is in effect the same as marriage, it’s just called something different. It works out fine, everybody has the same rights and nobody who bases their objection on religion feels threatened.

I do however somehow think that it’s hypocritical anyway for people to focus their attentions on the bible when condemning gay marriage and gay rights in general, and so for that reason don’t really see why it should be necessary to create a different word. People should just admit that they have personal prejudice and stop hiding behind their religion. If they truly were living their life by the teachings of the bible, then women would not be allowed to speak in public (unless, of course, their husband permitted them to), they wouldn’t wear polyester/cotton blends and it would be an detestable sin for them to have sporting heroes.

I'd have to say I prefer another name. While the governments might recognize  two men or two women getting being married, I won't (and dare I say, many Christians won't). Another name, with the same benefits would in the long run suit both parties much better.

That's a good thought. I think that we are sort of creating a space for ourselves in the society and we are creating something new. That's exciting! I'm thinking about it and i will post you once i come up with really good name for gay/lesbian marriage..

The prediction was anarchy…so said former NY Giants Superbowl star David Tyree. He was talking about the results of the hotly contested gay marriage bill which just passed in New York, granting the right to gays the nation over to…God forbid…tie the knot. Just what could he mean by anarchy? Could he mean the national rush of drag queens to Kleinfeld Bridal of television reality fame—to ‘say yes to the dress’? Did he mean that traditional brides would have to plan that much further in advance as all the good ballrooms of Manhattan will be scooped by the double income no kids, DINKs, flush with cash and desire to out do the last do? Or is it something simpler, like public displays of affection springing up everywhere—hand holding, kisses goodbye? I dare ask, has Tyree ever walked through Chelsea? If it means anarchy…bring it on. The last time I understood true anarchy was during the LA Riots where people of Tyree’s own ethnicity took to the streets to burn what they could to…I guess…make a point and scare a nation. Fear not Tyree, gays are scared of fire—too much product in our hair makes us more combustible than the average straight guy. There will be no burnings in the streets.

I would be bitterly opposed to a different name for a gay marriage.  The meaning in the dictionary will simply need to be updated when it becomes legal (which it will).  I want a marriage, not some gay word or phrase...if its not called a marriage then it simply isnt a marriage.
