Read this want ad.  Unfortunately this is God's record on earth.  He answered the ad, was hired and he has done his job exactly as the job description reads.

Along with his record, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in his name.

With this kind of record, does it make any difference whether there is a God or not?  What exactly has God done to improve life on earth?  Would the world be better off if no one believed in God?  Please think seriously about what religion has done to the earth.

Everyone says expect the unexpected, but since now everyone expects the unexpected, the unexpected is now the expected and the expected is the unexpected. So if you are expecting the unexpected, you are actually expecting the expected, so if you start expecting the expected, you will be expecting the unexpected. So everyone should start expecting the expected again and the expected will be expected and the unexpected will be unexpected again, then we can start expecting the unexpected again.

To JSF16 I partially agree, that religion in general has done good things for humanity. But also it has caused terrible things, for example extremist groups of religions like Al Qaeda, KKK and a favourite of mine Landover Baptist Church (There are HEAPS more). Though They probably don't consider themselves extremist they sure do seem like it to me.

How so? Well you can read a variety of topics like!

RAPE, Gods holy punishment for wickedness.http://www.landoverbaptist.net/showthread.php?t=4532

Homosexuals caused the Civil War http://www.landoverbaptist.net/showthread.php?t=28072

Nearly every religion has an extremist aspect, but as Chinese philosophy dictates, there is a Yin and Yang for everything, if you really want you could add Sir Isaac newtons Third law of reciprocal actions. "To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." So your question can be applied to technically a lot of things, for e.g.

"Do we really need guns? Do guns do more damage then good?"

Then that could go to.

"Do we need advanced weapons at all? Do missiles, bombs, tanks and other modern weapons of war do more harm then good?"

I myself an agnostic, but do see the benefits of such religions like Christianity, there are people out there who do good deeds because of their religion and faith, but also religion for all helps provide an 'answer' to those questions we ourselves yet cannot answer.

Religions gives faith to those who are lost and frightened, if you have not noticed but in dire times many religious people pray. Without their religion and faith they really would not have anything else to keep them going, some people might have sheer determination and mental drive, but not all have this and in turn this is supplemented with religion and faith.

A positive outcome for example can be seen here.

Humanist I can see where you are coming from, but I do believe you need to think more deeply into the subject matter without bias.

I am not saying life is better or worse with religion, because honestly that would strictly be in the context of "Life in relations to humans." But if you thought of it in the view of the WORLD as a WHOLE, then the planet would be MUCH better off without HUMANS at all.

Since we really don't do anything for nature, we don't have a 'natural role' to help keep BALANCE. Humans practically do whatever we like, with varying reasons of justification to why we do what we do.

A true academic should search for reasons why things are without bias, not why things aren't. For the former shall answer the latter.

God has given reasons for why these things happen. He says that if you are wicked or act wickedly you rebuked or shuned in a way and thus do not recieve his blessings. Bad things are done by satan.

Also religios fanatics like that do evil things are wicked.

Even if you do die you will go to Heaven if you follow God.

Which god are you talking about, and how do you know what he says?
