I recently bought some items from a well known auction site.

As part of my paranoid approach I asked the sellers to provide serial numbers for the product so I could check if the items were reported stolen.

A good place for this is  you post items here or check to see if something is reported stolen, it's free so you have nothing to lose by using this service.

Out of 4 sellers only 1 was prepared to give me the serial numbers. I can only assume that the other 3 had some (probably criminal) reason for not doing this.

Now as I found out a couple of years ago (to my loss) if an item is found to be stolen then, even though you buy it in good faith, you have to return it to the victim and there is no way to get your money back.

So my question is do people think auction sites are becoming an easy way for criminals to sell stolen items?

And.. Should auction sites do more to make it easier for purchasers to check and see if items have been reported stolen?

I think they should but I would like to hear others thoughts.
