What are your opinions on the fact that a male teacher who has an intimate relationship with a student will more than likely be put away for years and be labelled a 'predator' and 'rapist', while a female teacher who does the same thing will probably be put away for mere months or not at all and be labelled as 'desperate' and 'lonely'?

Many will argue that it is more likely that a male student (assumably in the female teacher situation) would consent to sex, but it is very likely that the female student in the male teacher situation (again, generalising) would also consent to sex. Either way, it is usually a case of statutory rape, but if it's consensual in both cases, why should there be such a discrepancy between the teachers' sentences?

Basically, this discrepancy labels women as the victim in both situations and that frustrates me.

Thoughts?

Haven't you ever been married?  It's always the man's fault!  All kidding aside, men are normally (for right or wrong) are seen as stronger and therefore it is harder to picture them as a "victim".  Woman are considered (again, for right or wrong) to be more emotional and can therefore have their emotions manipulated by man in an apparent position of authority (how often have you heard the phrase "looking for a father figure"?).  When it comes to sex, it's always considered to be an emotional thing for the woman (predator OR prey) and for the man it is considered nothing more than a primal urge (again, predator OR prey).

Yeah, I realise those sorts of perceptions influence the sentencing - I just think that the law should be able to look at the situation from a more objective and logical standpoint and make a decision that is fair and consistent, rather than giving into pressure from a subjective society. I guess it just annoys me, is all...

Probably because men do that type of thing. Also parents are generally more protective of their daughters.
