I'm 13 adn in 8th grade, and although I have ideas about issues, I have no idea what political party I identify with.

Although I honestly support no political parties and a system where people vote on issues and not on people, that isn't how it is.

I know a few of the opinions of parties on big issues, but I don't know the general ideas of the political parties. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

The problem with American politics is that it operates on a political "line" when in reality politics is a "square." I'll explain.

You can believe in a liberal government socially or a conservative one socially. And you can believe the government should intervene or not intervene in economic matters. So there are 4 combos: socially liberal/interventionist (thats me), socially liberal/non-inteventionist (libertarian), socially conservative/interventionist (many moderates), socially conservative/non-interventionists (conservatives).

Democrats are generally with me, but conservative democrats often fall into the moderate or (less often) libertarian catagory. Republicans would generally be conservative, but liberal republicans often fall into the libertarian (or less often) moderate catagory.

the problem is that there isnt enough of a difference between the democratic and republican party. they are both essentially centrist parties because their main goal is to get votes.

there needs to be four main parties: socialists, democrats, republicans, and libertarians. unfortunatly, our constitution isnt designed for a four-party system.

I am republican. I agree mostly what they believe. I believe in pro-life, lower taxes, war with Iraq and things like that.

Might I suggest you go on their websites and read their platforms and see which is most similar to your beliefs:

Liberatarian   http://www.lp.org/issues/
Republican    http://www.rnc.org/gopinfo/platform
American Independant   http://www.aipca.org/Platform/platform.html
Democratic   http://www.democrats.org/about/platform.html
Socialist     http://votesocialist.org/platform/

Thats most of them, if I missed a few forgive me.  Its been awhile since American Government Class ;)

careful when searching for socialist parties. there are at least 3 in the US alone (its splintered pretty bad). My favorite group is the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA- yeah the very same DSA in my name). they are the third most powerful political party in the country, with three representatives in congress (Bernie Saunders I-VT, Danny Davis D-IL, and Mejor Owens D-NY (DSA folks don't run on a DSA ticket, it doesn't exist. They run as part of other parties.))
