It is my distinct honor and pleasure to announce the first annual youdebate debate tournament of champions. On my distinguished judging panal sits myself, Tsmith, and Cool-hand-dave, whom I have selected due to their varied political beliefs and proven ability to debate intelligently and honestly. I have also selected the youdebaters who I feel have displayed a level of debating worthy of displaying in compition. So without further delay, here are the bracket/seedings.
(1) Alexanderthegreat vs.
(8) Exxoss
(2) Mrmazet vs.
(7) Madbilly
(3) Maynard vs.
(6) Thistownwilleatu
(4) Fallingupwards vs.
(5) Beavis
If any contestants/judges are unable/unwilling to participate, others will be drawn from the field. Once I hear back from all the people, I will post more details on format and topics. Congratulations and good luck!

Well, I'd love to. But me vs. Sakata? What would we debate? I think we agree on most everything. Also, Sakata hasn't even visted this site since Nov 5. You might not be able to even communicate with her. If you can set up a reasonable debate and get Sakata to do so, I will. But it might be easier to have me debate someone else. I'd enjoy debating you, you seem to be a good debater yourself.

oh yeah, and dsa, this might help us out as judges.  i don't know what you had in mind for the individual debates, but it would be easier to keep up with each if they were given their own thread.  that's probably one of those quite obvious things that i usually don't catch on to at first, but i didn't think the suggestion could hurt

Sounds good to me. Each round will probably get a thread in the stupid pointless debate section.

So far we're waiting on Prom, GS, Sakata, and Exxoss (GS says maybe).

Thanks for the invitation, but I will have to regretfully decline.  I am busy with work and school.  I could not guarantee I would be available on a daily basis to participate; so to be fair to everyone, you probably better get someone else.

OK! We are ready to kick this baby off!

First come the rules. The format will be a modified version of the National Forensic Leagues LD style debate. Here is how it will go.
Aff Constructive
Neg Constructive/Rebuttal
Aff Rebuttal/Rebuttal Defense (defending his own points from neg rebuttal)
Neg R/RD
Aff R/RD
Neg R/RD/Conclusion.
Aff Conclusion
The conclusion should be a sum of about 3 points that you feel prove u won the round. It can be points that you made, or opponents point that you (presumably) smashed. Note that the aff cannot make any new rebuttals on his last speech. Also note that the while the aff gets an extra speech, this is to make up for the fact that he is "posting blind" to start with. Trust me, its fairer.
Debaters are HIGHLY encouraged to rebut and defend the points they and their opponents make. They are highly DISCOURAGED from making brand new constructive points after the first speech. Citing specific sources is also encouraged, statistics, newspaper info, policy analysts are all acceptable. Also (alex im looking at you), they should clearly label their points with letters and numbers, so the compititors and judges can see them easily. Please skip a line when starting a new point.
Each pair will recieve a topic statement, which will be posted below. We will assign the topics, and the sides. No complaining! It is debate tournament, you are expected to be able to argue a side you disagree with. Considering it a character builder.
Judges of course will not interject their personal opinions into decisions. Advancement will be done by judge vote. Each judge will also post a short reason for decision.
I think that covers it.
Topics are posted below:
Alexander (AFF) vs. Exxoss (NEG)
The US should maintain laws regulating morality.
MrMazet (NEG) vs. Madbilly (AFF)
The US should overturn the 2nd amendment (pass another amendment negating it)
Maynard (AFF) vs. Thistownwilleatu (Neg)
Socialism is superior to Capitalism as a means to achieve economic justice.
Fallingupwards (NEG) vs. Beavischrist (AFF)
The US should abolish the death penalty.

Topic threads are being established in the stupid pointless debate section. non-opponents, refrain from posting in the forum until after the debate is over. all non-compititor posts should be ignored.
Good Luck!

I took 6th place. I didn't necessarily deserve higher, but their were some sheninagans that went on and screwed my friend out of placing (he was clearly in the top 2).

good for you, too bad for your friend.  i think to go and debate in a competition takes alot of guts and knowledge, i admire people like you and alexanderthegreat, even though we may not agree.

Me being a debater is both a blessing and a curse, for I forget others are not. I am perfectly happy to explain every last nuance of debate to anyone who will listen, but that is probably going to be a miserable failure. So I open the floor for suggestions...anybody?
