The Ad Council usually does a good job, but not this time.

They've got a campaign going that they started a few months ago that states that 20% of American children live with hunger. I find that statistic absurd. What do you think?

the only reason why you find that statistic absurd is because you are so caught up in your capitalist ideals that you think poverty does not exist. well i got news for you broker, even though u and all ur friends may be filthy rich, it does not mean that everyone else is.

typical capitalist.

Rich? Most certainly not.

20% is a high number. 11,760,000 children living with hunger?

12% of all Americans live in poverty. I think the number is way too high.

We need to define "hunger" is hunger not getting that second double-bacon cheeseburger or is hunger where you resemble one of those etheopian refugees?

Hmm... you're right. What do they mean by "hunger"... I'd like to know to justify their percentage.

Falling, maybe you should find some evidence to support the statistic instead of capitalist bashing.

Some homeless/hunger stats for you.

http://www.ecapc.org/articles/KohlsG_GrimStatistics.htm

4,500,000 children suffer from malnutrition, many of whom suffer brain damage
32,000,000 are chronically under- or unemployed, suffering malnutrition, inadequate health and dental care, inadequate or unsafe housing and poor educational and employment training opportunities for the children
80,000,000 live on incomes below the "comfort" level, 35,000,000 below the poverty level
2,000,000 are homeless, forced to live on the streets or in makeshift shelters

http://www.free-market.net/forums/main0207/messages/936601265.html
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports, based on a national U.S. Census Bureau survey of households representative of the U.S. population, that in 2000 10.5 percent of all U.S. households, representing 20 million adults and 13 million children, were "food insecure" because of lack of resources. Of the 11 million households that were food insecure, 3.3 million suffered from food insecurity that was so severe that USDA's very conservative measure classified them as "hungry." 5.6 million adults and 2.7 million children lived in these hungry households.

It's not starvation and no one is dying from it, but it's hardly comfortable living. Some things to bear in mind are:
- In practice "food insecurity" probably means having to make trade-offs between paying the rent, utility bills etc, and paying for food. A lot of this is cases of people who are employed and have families but just don't make enough money at their jobs to cover everything.
- A big reason why people are *not* starving to death in the USA are the safety net welfare programs. A lot of libertarians would abolish these.

That second one is just people who responded to the census and are NOT starving. Ignoreing starving children, that's over 20% living with hunger.

like most hard-right conservatives, you will never feel as though your are rich because you are always attempt to accumulate more wealth than your neighbors whom you compete with for the best yacht and bmw or mercedes.

it is know to most that people in the ghetto, barios, etc, etc,  suffer from both malnutriotion and overeatting. this is because the government subsidies highly refineed carbohydrates, but makes protein diets very expensive. thus the poor are constatnly starved of protein and fiber, while republican capitalist farmers get rich, and then give big campaign contributions to bush.

this also serves the hard-right wingers by causeing minorities to die faster because of heart diease, cancer, and other obsesity related illness.
