Lenski at Michigan State started an experiment a number of years ago.  He started with a single E. Coli bacterium, allowed it to split, then started culturing 12 isolated lines from the original single organism.

Turns out that one of the lines developed a mutation around generation 20,000.  Having that mutation allowed a second (or third, it hasn't been sequenced yet) to metabolize citrate, which  was used as part of the growth medium.  None of the other 11 lines have been able to do this.  Likewise, if they take a frozen sample from before the 20,000 mark, and "replay" the experiment, that can't either, but after the 20,000 it does.

Evolution of new functions under strict laboratory conditions and observation.

Pogge:” This is the volume of a sphere with a 62 kilometer (about 39 miles) radius, which is considerably smaller than the 2,000 mile radius of the Earth.”
Wikipedia:” For Earth, the mean radius is 6,371.009 km(≈3,958.761 mi; ≈3,440.069 nmi).”
Wisp to Lester (on Pogge): Do you admit he was wrong about the basics?
Lester: No

Very interesting.  Another piece of information showing that evolution is a fact, not 'just a theory'.

I'll be very interested when they get it sequenced so we can see exactly how the new information was added to the genome.

Here's a story I came across from the New York Times that gives more modern examples of evolution being observed:

Oh, then there is the discovery of tiktaalik which is further proof of evolution's predictive power.
