instead of discussing topics like school uniforms and the sort, what about teacher salaries? i'm 18 years old, a freshman at college, and i'm getting a history major so i can eventually teach history at a school. even though i'm going to contribute much more to society than someone like a corporate executive, i'm never going to make much money because teacher salaries are ridiculously low. what do you guys think?

well to put it this way. Teachers only work half the year and make (in Georgia anyway) around 24 thousand a year. This is what the average american makes and teachers only work around 195 days a year (a school year is 180 days). so id say they make pretty good for only working half a year...of course this is in georgia and it might be different elsewhere.

most jobs that require a degree start out at at least 35,000. so i think it is justified that teachers complain about their pay. after all, who is more valuable to society: someone who teaches and educates people to become future leaders, or an accountant? well, an accountant is going to make more even though his/her contribution to society is considerably less.

i think everyone agrees that teachers are underpaid, but how many people would pay extra taxes to better fund the school systems that are currently already under funded. I thnk teachers should be paid more, but i think that not many people want a tax increase, and look at police officers, and construction workers, and road workers, they are heavily under paid for there work, andany construction worker or blue collar worker does work that is back breaking, and they have to work out in the heat or the cold, in the rain or the snow, arent they underpaid as well. We are a capitalist country and people get paid well depending on what type of company they work for, and how much they contribute to that company. Teachers are government employees, dont complain to citizens complain to the government, call your senator or congressman.

all government employees are heavily underpaid. that is another argument for socialism. in a socialist society, teachers could make a descent wage and not every CEO would be a multi-millionare (or billionare for that matter)

Of course teachers are underpaid.  It is a pretty sad commentary on life when people will pay more to someone to fix their toilet than they will to teach their children.

i think we should take 3/4 of the salary all the major movie stars and sports stars and give it to teachers.  i do believe that if teacher were paid more what they are worth, then public schools would be alot better.

i agree many of you here but i do not think that teachers should get paid more

they are underpaid, everyone knows that, but public school teachers do jack crap
construction workers do 10x more work than teachers and build all your stuff for you, yet they make less than teachers

and its not just teachers that are underpaid, every government job, with the exception of congressmen and the president, is underpaid

there isnt enough tax money to go around with all the money spent on the military now a days, although it is necessary for the military budget to be rather large, im sure they could spare several billion for issues like this one

Teachers do get the cold shoulder more often than not. I, being in the military, do not think that most government jobs get the money they rate. Except for polititions that make more in a year than I do in 20! All they do is sit around and talk all day, only to vote another pay raise into effect.

all government employees are underpaid, nobody can deny that fact. so how do we raise revenue to pay them? tax the rich billionares like bill gates and use that money to help pay teacher salaries.

davecee (aka ghettocracka) you are stupid. teachers do a lot of work, more than you'll ever do in ur lifetime.

I totally agree that teachers should get higher salaries. I'm working on a bill for Government and i would LOVE to hear some more passionate positions on both sides. If anyone has any good articles, recources and so on, it would be great if you would share them with me.

Teachers will get higher salaries when citizens decide to pay higher taxes.  Not being sarcastic, its just what the facts boil down to.

or teachers will get higher salaries when the government realizes that their citizens are becoming more ignorant every year.  instead of putting hundreds of billions of dollars a year on a war that doesn't directly affect our nation, or billions a year on a national war (drug war) that is causing more harm than good, or cutting extraneous agencies that are only raking in money for their own benefit, they could put it all into education.  all that money is yours, why is the government squandering it thusly?

but, i doubt they would rather make their people smarter (more likelier to figure out they are frauds and vote them out of office) than make as much money as they do.  they are not filthy rich because they take our money directly, but because they use our money to invest in things for their own reasons, not for ours.

I believe that teacher need to get paid based on their success rate. It would force teacher to come up with way to teach kids better, because if they don't they won't get paid as much. In the revers teachers that are out standing will be reworded for their efforts.

Exactly. Teachers should be paid according to their skill level, seniority, and quality of work. Why should a recent college grad teacher make as much as a teacher that has been teaching for 30 years? Furthermore, by implementing a capitalist system in our schools, it leads to the most qualified teachers being paid the most, and filters out the unqualified teachers.

Salaries based on performance encourage competition, which means the best teachers win. Also, schools will then be competing with one another to employ and retain the best teacher, which, in turn, would eliminate the unqualified schools and result and maximum teacher and student performance.

Also, I am disturbed by the Socialist ideas being thrown around in this thread. Tax the rich? Take from one group and give to another? That is Communism, that is anti-capitalist, and that is anti-American. You don't punish society's most productive members of society by taxing them, and giving their hard-earned money to people less productive. That's what is wrong with liberals: every problem can be solved by throwing more money at it, and taxing the rich. This idea is so Marxist that is scares me tremendously.

I know why don't we give the poor everything and take it all away fromthe rich. That way no one feels bad because some one els has more than them.
