if we were able to eliminate drug use altogether, would people REALLY be missing anything worthwhile... put forth any opinions in support of that "experimental" stage in adolescents.

To understand why people take drugs, you need to understand the effects and thus to be in a complte knowledge of understanding you really need to have taken them your selves. Yes drugs harm people, but so does sun batheing or smokeing or alchol. There is so much in life that we choose to do that dangers our lives, even somthing as simple as driving.
However this is not to say drugs should be legal, becuase then people would try to find somthing even better. I think if drugs were eliminated all together people would just try to experiment to find somthing else to give them a frill. To be honest leave drug laws as they are and its the persons choice if they choose to take them or not, and commit a crime in doing so.

The experimental stage in adolescence can be both a positive and negative experience:

Positive, in that this allows us to know what our limits are when it comes to certain things, and know how they affest us. Knowing such things can provide great grounding for safeguards that we can put in place for ourselves.

Negative, in that the 'experimental' stage is, in fact and quite obviously, the first phase along the road to addiction to something (e.g. drugs). If the effects are enjoyed in this stage, it is likely that the individual will continue along the road to an addiction (phases including: 'Social' use, 'Daily Preoccupation" and, eventually, "Addiction" or dependency).

This is an unfirunate risk of this experimentation, but i still feel that adolescents should have the right to make choices about their lifestyles at some point and, in today's society, that includes experimenting with drugs.

some drugs have the ability to 'open our eyes' in a sense.  especially the hallucinogenic ones.  they act by speeding up our synapses so that association is hundreds of times faster than normal.  Subconscious thought becomes more prominent and there is an almost childlike state in the user, because the senses are being associated to so many memories at once.  Its like normal thought in overdrive.  Many people have epiphanies and philosophical thoughts while on drugs.  I think, in great moderation, certain drugs are vital for our modern society.

I absolutely agree with you. certain drugs such as mushrooms, lsd, and dmt lead people away from drug addictions such as alochol and tabacco. its crazy they're outlawed.
