I suppose that depends on what "punishment" and what "violence" you have in mind.

Depends, violence on a field or off the field.  Once they are off the field they are just people, laws should be the same.

yes...but on the field, if it is against the rules... then punish them, if it isnt and well within the game, than the person they harm or crime they commit is aware of it happening and is the contenders own fault

On or off, they should be punished if the coach finds out.  They are just people, but they still have a reputation to keep.

Should boxers be charges with assault after every match?  No, some laws are understood to be void, because it's a part of the sport.  But there is a big difference than the malicious stuff, like that guy getting thumped by a hockey stick swung baseball bat style in the back of the head.  There is a line.

if they are violent off of the feild, they should be punished as normal citizens, no worse, no better.  when they take the job as an athlete i do not feel like they are agreeing to be perfect role models.   unless it is stated in their contract, no one has any right to punish them differently.

I agree with thistown. I don't believe they should get punished as long as its part of the game, but just because there sport stars doesn't mean they should be able to do everything.

There should be a sport were any athlete can play and they just kill eachother in a room of doom. Last man alive wins. Only problem it may raise taxes for the meds to be there.

All Atheletes should show sportsmenship and if they ingage in violent activity it presents a negative imange to their team. However nothing to drastic should be done, maybe a suspention or two. The other person always has the option of pressing charges.

Well in my view a sport is an entertainment. So when speaking of punishing athletes for inappropriate violence we should first define in whose perspective we are viewing the whole issue. If it is the view of a general viewer then probably the violence might be entertaining(fulfilling its purpose). Even if it is not entertaining the viewer has no right to punish as he has no legal power against him. But in the case of an official then there is obviously no question. There is no question. Obviously punishment is due. But what type of punishment i would suggest that higher authorities should decide. And it will always be beneficial to have set rules in case of such incidences
