I just got the new Joe Cocker album Ultimate Collection.  He does a great cover of the Beatles- With a little help from my friends.  It is a great version and was the theme song for the Wonder Years.  My question is- Can a cover be better than the original?  and Is Cocker's version better than the Beatles'?

I'm a musician myself. I love AND appreciate a good cover tune once in awhile. I especially love playing them live in various bands. It really is the ultimate in fantasy living. I'm not pro but I have played professional in the past. Even when I'm in an original band, I insist on playing a cover tune or two...or three.

It's all about entertainment. It's all about fun. I've gotten some of the biggest responses from audiences by shooting out a cover tune. They are always appreciated. Everyone, it seems, has their own reasons for liking covers of original songs. Live or otherwise. Do they always go over well? Of course not. Do the artists who covered them care a whole lot? Not really.

Whether Joe Cocker's Beatles cover helps sell his album more, most likely isn't much of a concern to him. I'll bet he just loves The Beatles and or that particular song. Back in my day when I was in Highschool, Motley Crue of all bands, did a Beatles cover tune. They did Helter Skelter. I totally loved it. YET...I had never heard the original version before. The album made it clear in writing that it was a Beatles song. Although it didn't make me go out and buy Beatles albums, I still cranked that song as loud as the other songs.

Was it better than the original? At the time, I would have said yes if I had heard it. Since then I've heard the original many times and think it's way cool. Believe it or not, I now appreciate them in completely different aspects. I wouldn't even think of comparing the two. BUT...I'm a musician who likes to think he has a fairly open mind about such things.

I can guarentee you though, there were most likely many Beatles fans who would've liked to have strung Motley Crue up by their big hair. Once again, did that cover tune help sell that album any better? Who knows. I'll bet it didn't hurt.

Come to think of it, MANY of the bands of my time did covers on one or more of their albums. It's not at all what they were known for. In all reality they didn't HAVE to do it. As a younger person I never used to question it. I suppose I still don't. Now that I've played cover tunes, live for audiences, I've come to understand it. I enjoy it thoroughly.

I've seen Joe Cocker's performances. Unfortunately only on TV. But he is without doubt, one of THE most passionate singers I've ever encountered. I'll bet he loves that Beatles song. I'll bet it's probably one of his most favorite in the whole world.

Is his version better than the original? Music, to me, is art. It's in the eye of the beholder. I know that sounds cliche, and maybe it is. I can't say for certain, but I'll bet the Beatles love it. Or at least appreciate it. I'd be flattered myself.

Does cover tuning bridge generation gaps? I think it does.

But thats another post...
