The link didn't work for me.

The sites are the provate property of the owners.  If the owners want to cencor the materials on their sites, then they are free to do so.

If they do not wish to consor others, then they are free to do that as well. The person viewing the site has the option of closing the browser window.

I do not agree.  Censorship keeps us from knowing the truth.  Right now, Bush is not almost attack Bin Laden.  In truth, he is actually bombing innocent villages to 'smoke out' Bin Laden.  Is this right? no, and internet censorship supports that.

Exactly my point.  Censorship keeps us from seeing the truth, as well as bad things.  But who doesn't accidentaly come across bad things once in a while?  Yes.  But does everyone come across propaganda?  No, most kids dont even know that we are bombing afghanistan innocence!!!!

The gov. certainly shouldn't ban cencorship because that violates the Constitution, but does that count for parental controls?

Censor all censorship!  People need to know the truth, about bombs in afghanistan, about pornography (that it does happen) about extreme violence, etc.

i am against censorship in all forms, people have the right to veiw whatever they want, i dont like stuff shoved in my face, but if i want it it shouldnt be censored.  here in utah, at particular grocery stores they have these black platic covers to cover the fashion mags at the checkout, and some rent out E rated movies, as in all sex, nudity, and swearing is edited out.  that just aint right.

I'm partly against censorship but i'm a bit more on the pro side.
PRO: Censorship is a good idea but questionably, and not the best yet. But still, it does make something good. It's theme of reviewing the Internet for it's obscene and pornographic contents and to thrash it out of the system, leaving the good and fully essential information, is acceptably and morally right and correct. As parents, they don't know everything their children are doing 24/7. Actually we, the children, spend more time at school and statistically see our school buddies more often than our family. Maybe that's why the responsibility of the parents to protect their children from the explicit contents of the internet is not completely done. Yet, we know, that the main reason is SELF-DICIPLINE. And this is what we lack. How could we prevent people/the youth to explore this information super highway when we can't even control ourselves?
CON:Censorship is plainly unconstitutional. It deprives us from our freedom of expression/ of the press as also clearly stated in our Constitution. When internet undergoes censorship, we won't be sure if ALL the unnecessary information will be removed or if ALL the necessary info will be left. Yet if it's unconstitutional, aren't the "illegal" contents of internet NOT unconstitutional??

How far should censorship go? The most common opinion is the "no censorship" idea.
While I share this opinion in moderation, don't you think there are some things common people do not really need to know? I am aware that this post is mainly on internet censorship, but if the internet gets it, other forms of media are sure to follow. Also, what of spying and the like? If some idiot hacker decided to find out whats behind this or that firewall and let out sensitive information, is that a case of censorship, or something else? How about credit card numbers or social security numbers? Is holding those back a form of censorship?

i am not against rating systems for movies and games and music, i think they are very uselful to let people make an semi-informed decision about something.

I think that the internet should be free, as it is a public forum. Noe censorship there. However, other forms of media (note, I use the term "media" as "a form of communication"
not just newspapers, books, ect...) such as classified documents need to be kept censored and secret.

There's a good point there. How about this compromise: Everyone can write/say/draw what they like, but no one else has to see/read/listen to it unless they want to.

(leaving open the issue of parents censoring what their children, which I'm not taking into consideration in this proposition.)

It seems a simple fact has gone out the window: this is an OPINION post, not a fact post (except when supporting an argument). So if I say porn is bad, thats just my take on it. I really don't care if others find true happieness in porn, but if they do a change of hobbies is in order. (also just an OPINION)

it has actually been proven that pornography can have negative effects on every day human beings. keep in mind that i am against censorship. i am just merely trying to prove that pornography is addicting and harmful.

psychologists have studied this topic for decades and it has been generally accepted that pornography has a negative effect on human behavior. psychologists have found that brief exposure to violent forms of pornography can lead to anti-social attitudes and behavior. male viewers tend to be more aggressive towards women, less responsive to pain and suffering of rape victims, and more willing to accept various myths about rape. it has also been shown that continued exposure to pornography has serious adverse effects on beliefs about sexuality and on attitudes toward women.

here are some interesting facts i found when researching this topic on the internet this morning:

in two decades in the state of michigan, out of the 38,000 sexual assault cases, 41% of them were viewing pornography just prior to or during the crime.

70% of pornographic magazines sold ends up in the hands of children.

adult bookstores, videostores, and theaters outnumber McDonalds restaurants in the US 3:1

most psychologists who study human behavior agree that pornography has negative effects. it is very addicting for one. it degrades women and causes men to believe women are inferior. and it also causes most viewers to undermine rape.

The first Amendment to the constitution says that people have the right of freedom of speech, and press... and something else.  The internet it almost a form of press, therefor it is legal for people to post pornography on their websites but I do think that you must have to click on a link (other than a google, dogpile, etc. link) before going into the site that has pornography with a caution sign saying that the website has pornography.

Everything has its pros and cons. Inernet censorship is also has some advantaqges and disadvantages.According to my opnion, there should be censhorship to fully adult sites It should be edned with .xxx not .com and .net.Secondly its parent duty to decide what thier child should access. Adult education is a part of our education system. So that censor all the sex related material on internet is not god idea.
                                  Thanks

There must never be censorship on the internet or anywhere else. That's not the occupation of the government. The governments job (supposedly) is to provide for all it's citizen and keep them safe not by keeping them in the dark via censorship.

Hi bograt,
I am a new member....
Just a clarification....
This is a debating forum, where we sort of put forward both arguments and opinions.... as it helps us know how the society and the common man(if we are common men) thinks....

Most of the arguments in this forum (not just this post) go in absolute... like the constitution gives us infinite freedom of...say...expression.... and it needs to be upheld...

I am trying a balance here.... with specific reference to this case....
I say that there are certain cases, where the freedom is overridden for more pressing needs.... I have the right to say that GWB is an a**hole... but I cant publicise it.... GWB reserves the right to sue me for libel....
I have the right to spread a rumour saying that US guards in Iraq are carrying out secret assasination missions of clerics in subtle ways like poisoning.... it might or might not be confirmed (cos it is classified to let out facts that prove/disprove it). But it hurts national security, and if I publicise it, the govt can arrest me... as this directly translates into demoralisation of trrops who believe they are fighting for a cause... it translates into national instability....

Eminem gave his raw version - and created a trend of banned/rated lyrics - government censorship...

so what is the legal balance, under what conditions can I be banned from giving the raw version of my expression? Do these conditions apply to the internet as well... which sections do they apply to? ergo, which sections, can we 'safely' ban, as a balance of government stake in society vs individual rights, without hindering freedom of expression of the general public?

Is there a problem in the first place? a Harm to society? Lets assume, from my peer's statistics, that pornography has harmful effects, or atleast has potential to cause harm to society.

On applying the ban, is this ban practical? Can it be done on a groundlevel exactly as we discuss it on a principle level? are there loopholes? will there be still a demand, leading to unregulated black markets?
If there are harms from the ban also, what leads to greater good?

On a third level, what are the alternatives? like parental discretion? do they work?(I wudnt think so) how does porn work? how does it translate into harm? is it possible to separate harm from porn itself in the first place? (logically, no these are pics and vidz... censorship or a 'balanced opinion' can't be given in the form of...say...other pictures)

I mean this as fuel for thought....in a more complete perspective....

Since when does the US own the internet? I am against censorship 100%.  I am also a parent.  If I don't want my kids to see something/hear something then I do not let them listen or look at it.  It really is that simple.  The arguement that you can not watch over your kids 24/7 is great, but that is why you teach values and respect to your child. If they are exposed to something they should have been taught to say no.  Censorship is a load of bull.  Free speech is another line the government feeds us to make u sthink we are free.  The US has more censorship than any other country and that is sad.
People need to start parenting their own children and stop waiting for the government to do it for them.
If you don't liek something then don't watch it, listen to it, read it - whatever.  Be an adult and let it go.  Stop trying to impose your views on me by censoring anything and everything you can.

I find it hard to believe that the US has more censorship than any other country.  I tend to think that there are a great number of African, and Middle East (at a minimum) countries that would disagree with you.
