Funny, I must have missed that day in vocabulary lessons.  I've always followed this definition of what a weapon is:

weapon:

1) An instrument of attack or defense in combat, as a gun, missile, or sword.

2) Zoology. A part or organ, such as a claw or stinger, used by an animal in attack or defense.

3) A means used to defend against or defeat another: Logic was her weapon.

Funny, in the U.S. five times more people get killed by guns per year than in the whole European Union and Japan in total, where guns are restricted.
Actually not funny, just pathetic.

why dont you try finding info on how many people are protected by guns?

its easy to find statistics about how many people are killed by guns, because that is what soceity wants you to know.

it doesnt make a good story to report that a person is alive tonight because they shot the hell out of their assailant.

try finding the facts.

well 2 million criminals are stopped a year by guns....this is from a report by the bereu of alcohol tobacco and fire arms...now those two million crimes stopped a year, just think about the crimees it also prevented by stopping a criminal from doing more crime afterwards...so in essence isnt it going to be more than 2 million crimes a year stopped bc if the criminal is shot and arrested or shot and killed he can no longer commit more crimes.

Oh, sure. It really gives me great feeling of protection and safety, knowing anybody is possibly carrying a gun.
What about escalation of violence? When do you feel threatened enough to use a gun?
That differs from person to person. Of course, some people can handle a gun with responsibility, but many don't.
In my opinion guncontrol will make police work easier and safer.

think of this, how much crime do you think would be committed if everyone carried a gun, and everybody else knew that?

First, I have to wonder at why you choose to post as "Guest" instead of finding a name so that I can direct my response to you personally.  Here's the person to whom I am responding:

"Funny, in the U.S. five times more people get killed by guns per year than in the whole European Union and Japan in total, where guns are restricted. Actually not funny, just pathetic."

Curious, that Britain's rate of crime has skyrocketed since gun control.  So has Australia's.  Also interesting that you make a comparison between only numbers of people murdered -- and not percentages.

Also ironic that you neglected to mention Switzerland, which allows the majority of the population to keep automatic weapons in their home.  Switzerland's homicide rate is 1.32 per 100,000, while England's is 1.41.

Yes, Japan's rate of homicide is very low, in both firearm AND non-firearm homicides.  This is more to do with culture than the availability of guns, as are most fluctuations in the gun homicide rates.

Think about it...throughout the 20th century, gun controls have become more and more strict.  And at the same time, gun homicide rates have risen.  What does this tell you?

First, I'm guest, because i dont want to register in every forum i discuss on.
Speaking of rates: The US has over 5 murders per 100.000 population. European Union average varies between 1.1 and 1.5. I think, that stands for itself.
Switzerland is not a member of the EU and their gun laws are considered as a problem for the adjacent countries. Having a low rate is reduced to a little citylife. By the way, half-automatic and automatic guns are NOT allowed in Switzerland. Read their gun law, before spreading untruth.
So when you use statistics, let them speak for you not against you.

Columbine is an excellent film. I find it funny that maynard thinks "society" only wants us to know one side. The fact is that gun companies have huge amounts of money and political power. If by society, you mean the powerless, then I agree, society does generally only look at how many people guns kill.

The media are owned by the rich and conservative. Any left slant they portry is put there soley for the purpose of making more money, which leads to the owners having more power. The media is also plays its part in making us all want guns to protect ourselves. When they report on gun deaths and other deaths and improbable deaths (I saw a news story about how digging holes at the beach could lead to your death) it only makes the population shit themselves and buy more guns.

Sorry to sound cliche', but GUNS don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people!

Sure, people use guns to kill, but they also kill with other things: knives, baseball bats, poison, and their bare hands.
Should we outlaw knives, (how would we cut up our potatoes), baseball bats? Our hands?

Another point I should make is that there are a lot more people who own guns and don't use them to kill people, than people who use them for murder.
Don't judge us (gunowners) by what the "bad guys" do with theirs.
You only hear about the negative things about guns, not about the good.
Why? The media knows that people (yes, even you) like to hear a "good" story: violence, killing; because it's more interesting.

I admit that guns are a problem.  But ONLY when they fall into the wrong hands.

And as long as the "bad guys" have guns, the "good guys" will need their guns to protect themselves.

If you could find a way to absolutely, positively make sure that "bad guys" don't get guns, then I MIGHT consider giving up mine.

I think that it's obvious that guns are here to stay.

Also consider that some day, God forbid, (sorry to offend any atheists) America's military forces could be defeated and a foreign army could march into our lands with intention of killing us all.  Wouldn't you like to have some protection?

I know that sounds far-fetched, but it could happen!

If our military is defeated, then as a last resort, the citizens in a sense, "become" their own army.

This may be a little off the topic:

but I think that the "right to bear arms" issue may have been the single thing that made the 2000 pres. election so close.

Otherwise, I think Gore would have won by a landslide.

During that time, I spoke to many people (in the South), even many Democrats, that said that they were voting for George Bush solely because they didn't want to lose their right to bear arms.

On December 7, 1941 a Japanese sneak attack left Pearl Harbor virtually defenseless.  After the war, surviving Japanese officers were asked, "Why was there no invasion following the successful attack?"

One remarked, "Because we were not fools to get caught in quicksand."  What he meant was they were aware of civilians owning firearms in Hawaii and thought it would be foolish to have a rifle pointed at them from every kitchen window.

Where did he get those numbers from in the other cases I have not found anything saying that.  Where did he get any of the numbers from as for that, I have not been able to find them either (gun deaths per country).

I'm going to try and give forth my own perspective on gun control.

First, to address Michael Moore's movie Bowling for Columbine. Mr. Moore brings up great topics. When I went into the film, I was of the mindset that handguns were unnecessary and "dangerous to the general public." I find it ironic that the questions brought about by Moore's attempt at making a point got my curiosity up, and after doing quite a bit of research on my own, I've become stronlgly in favor of the movement to preserve the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (RKBA).

I've even joined the NRA. Yes, hell hath frozen over. But, aside from the hundred bucks or so I kick to Planned Parenthood each year, it's the best cause I can support to protect the basic rights of us Americans.

Here's the deal. I'm a woman. I've been sexually assaulted and mugged. (Not by black men, so my fear doesn't stem from racism, as Moore might imply). I've also had my home burglarized. (I wasn't home, thank goodness.)

I've also learned that not only is 911 response time many times as long as the typical violent attack, the police are here to protect society as a whole--and are not obligated (or reasonably able) to protect each individual citizen. Look it up.

After a long internal debate, I've taken it upon myself to learn firearms safety from many sources. I've purchased a handgun, and have qualified for and been issued a license to carry a concealed handgun. I've also purchased a safe that will secure my weapon(s) when they are out of my immediate control.

And while it's not a talisman to protect me from all evil and harm, I feel better knowing I have it. I also feel better, having communicated with a large group of gunowners on online forums and at shooting clubs, that the stereotypical "gun nut" is just that--a stereotype. Sure, there are plenty of mulleted, toothless yahoos out there, but that's a small percentage of the crowd. And a stereotype that is portrayed by the media to soothe the expectations of a public that has been conditioned to believe that a handgun, independently of human power, will sneak up on you and blow your head off just for spite.

Another point. The "gun nuts are all right-wing, Bush-loving Republicans" is also wrong. Like many in my own Democratic party, many Republicans are finding issue with our government's betrayal of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. We hear about Michael Moore asking, "Dude, where's my country?" It's a cry heard on all sides of the fence. Which leads me to...

...The right to keep and bear arms is important to us not only to protect ourselves in the rare but very possible scenario of violence, but against a government that no longer represents and serves the people who it should answer to. Yes, we elect our officials, but officials don't always keep their promises. It's politics. Look at the countries that became oppressive of their citizens, and you'll find that disarming them was a key point in the timeline of that oppression.

Also, look at incidents in recent history--but look at them using information other than mainstream media as your source. Waco. Ruby Ridge. I know, I know, I sound like a "militia-minded, paranoid, Dale-Gribble-type" woman, but there are many questions that weren't asked by the mainstream media. Questions you'd be interested in hearing about.

To sum it up, I support the Right to Keep and Bear Arms because the more we "let" our government "watch out for us", the more freedoms we, as capable citizens, will lose. Many laws established in the War on Drugs have been enhanced to facilitate the war on domestic terror (Patriot Act). As much as I feel we all have to be cautious and wake up, I'm opposed to the "big brother" direction in which our country's leadership is headed. I have to wonder...what's next?

You'd never guess, if you saw me, that I carry a gun in public. But I do. My neighbors and close friends know I do. And most of them have told me--no matter their own beliefs on gun control in general--that they feel safer in my company because of it.

And please, don't say "well, you can spell. Most gun people are ignorant and are probably rednecks and shouldn't have guns because they don't fit this or that profile." Before you truly become grounded in your position on this issue, challenge yourself by researching our side of the fight.

Thanks for reading.

Documentary? Huh?

This movie is a work of fiction. It's also the first work of fiction to ever win an award for a documentary...

Wrong, guns are made to fire a small metal projectile in a direction chosen by the user. WHat the projectile is aimed at is determined by you.

Moore has a nastly habit of distorting (read:ignoring) the fact in his "documentaries".

One such example: Moore portrays Canada as a magical happy land of peace and love. What he doesnt mention is, Canada's rate of gun ownership is propertionately higher than america's, 1 gun for every 3 people.

What he also fails to mention is, the weapons used by Eric and Dylan were illegal. A lot of good gun control did then, huh?

Quote from Maynard "it just the truth, i am never giving up my guns, especially to our government."

i agree on this matter solely on the purpose that i am as far against our government as one can legally go. I believe in Communist ideas. dont hate me for it, i think it would bring much order in countries, not out of spite for the U.S., economically this country is a very strong thing, but i still think communism is better. i shouldn't have get out cuz i hate america(i don't!), i just disagree, like many do with anti gun laws! should they get out too?

HOWEVER, when you consider deaths i believe the gun control should lower somewhat. look at other countries, where more people would be more likely to have guns, but lowering it all the way means total gun anarchy where any rapist and murderer can grab an m16. i find that quite a significant consideration.

as for Moore hes biased and as such an unreliable source(he's unwilling to accept the other fact as possible).

Think before you jump.

Equality is the only fair thing.

Question all your beliefs before you believe them, you might find you dont believe them.
