Gun control is here defined as legislation restricting the public's access to firearms.

The majority of criminals who commit crimes with firearms, obtain these weapons illegally. Gun control legislation is not able to control the illegal traffic in firearms which supplies them. Therefore, gun control will be ineffective in reducing crimes involving firearms.

I agree gun control laws are retarded but "gun control" is good for aiming and getting good shots.

An outright ban on guns is a terrible idea...in the U.S. that is. There are far too many firearms in circulation right now, and a ban would only criminals have access to BOTH illegal ones as well as stolen ones that were purchased illegaly. It is unnecesasry risk that would put even more citizens' lives at risk.

What source did you use? The one I use says that according to FBI Crime Reports, there are about 340,000 reported firearms thefts every year. Most of these guns were originally manufactured and purchased legally, and are now in the hands of criminals. What happens is many guns bought legally are sold or stolen, and can then be used for crime. That means the reason there are so many guns in the hands of criminals is because so many are sold legally. I'll be happy to verify my source and provide a link, if you are willing to give your source.

There will always be a way to obtain a gun illegally, just like I can purchase illegal drugs. The difference is that guns are legally manufactured and sold, unlike marijuana.  Gun control is meant to minimize unnecessary injuries and fatalities, not completely eliminate violent crimes. If obtaining a gun legally is extremely difficult, the price of illegal guns goes way up, and availability goes way down. Thus, it is much more difficult for criminals to obtain guns.

fOrest your not making sense... price of illegal guns goes up if they can't be obtained legally yet you say that most guns criminals use are stolen ones so what did they have to pay for them????  Or if I can't buy one legally then a criminal can't steal my gun because I don't have one, yet you say that illegal guns will always be available like drugs... which is it???  Ban guns so they can't be bought legally then stolen illegally and create an illegal black market for guns which will make them too expensive for a criminal to purchase anyway. So that criminal will now cease his criminal activities because he can't afford a gun.  That's insane logic...

f0rest,

I am trying to determine your ultimate point.  Is your point that an outright ban is good in principle but bad in practice?

My point is that currently criminals have two markets available to them: the black market and the legal market. Many guns bought legally are sold or stolen and made available to criminals. Thus, the price and effort of getting a firearm for criminals is quite minimum. If we tighten up on gun regulations and make it difficult for a non-law-abiding citizen to get it through legal means, they will only have the illegal market open to them. I never said an outright ban would work in the U.S., so the legal market will not be eliminated of course. I am just for more gun control and making it harder for criminals to use the legal market.

kindrox, the U.S. is a special case where banning guns would be bad in practice. The proliferation of firearms has saturated the market making it too easy for anyone to buy a gun. We pay a heavy price in many lives per because of our right to bear arms, and I would like to see that severely minimized without infringing on an well-qualified and responsible person's right to use a gun. Many other developed nations have no need for such a right and are doing just fine; but they are not the U.S. and other factors besides the gun plays a role in violence here. Guns just make it more easy for them to do it.

"no one answers nothing anymore"?

Let's see... double negative means someone is answering... wait, what's the point?

hey all....new to the place.i am hoping to give my veiws and opinions on this matter since i do own firearms...

1....how does disarming legal citizens stop gun violence....it cant, wont and dont.disarming legal citizens will only make the criminals job easier.
2....if you can sue say remington for a gun death why cant we sue ford for a dwi death....same diffrence?

things to remember....it is a constitutional right, gun control is needed...yes i said that but...you need to disarm the criminal, not the sportsman, the target shooters and so forth...(responsible gun owners)

and the best argument of all....guns dont kill people....a "gun" has no intetion of killing....neither does a newborn child....but when newborn grows up gets drunk and climbs into his/her car...now its on....a gun in the wrong hands is death....a gun in the right hands of a law abiding citizen is needed.

foot note to add something simple...think about the eco system without deer hunters....deer will multiply in record numbers, now you have bambi and family starving....all critters...not just bambi....deer,squirrel,turkey,even fish...they need to be kept under control cause they dont have control...example....wild turkey were almost non existant in some areas....but do to regulations they are back in record numbers....in just a few years.imagine what the record numbers would look like without firearms to control them with?plus the disease from the rotting bodies....all do to over population

“Obviously, self defense is not a good argument against gun control since those who own firearms are actually more likely to be victims of homicide. Two studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine revealed that keeping a gun in the home increases the risk of both suicide and homicide. Keeping a gun in the home makes it 2.7 times more likely that someone will be a victim of homicide in your home (in almost all cases the victim is either related to or intimately acquainted with the murderer) (http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/short/329/15/1084) and 4.8 times more likely that someone will commit suicide (http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/abstract/327/7/467).  Therefore, guns make it more likely that a suicide attempt will be successful than if other means were used such as sleeping pills.”

The New England Journal of Medicine talking about guns???

Hey, you know, in the last issue of Guns and Ammo, I saw an excellent article discussing proper procedure on open heart surgery. I think that I am now a full qualified heart surgeon

Seriously though, guns DO NOT cause suicide, and in fact do not even necessarily make it easier, I know of many cases where people have shot themselves and lived.

Take guns out of the equation, well now the New England Journal of Medicine will have to cover how having knives in the house make it so much more likely that one will attempt suicide and be successful.

In my opinion, I think that if guns are taken away more people will go to jail. Not only will criminals have the advantage because people will have no protection, but they will be arresting the good people who keep a weapon for self defence. Also it will cost alot of money to put all these people in jail, the money that should be put towards keeping crime off the streets. Honestly, i think that as soon as they take guns away muggers, burglars, rapists, and murderers will see it as one thing less to worry about. Crimes will go through alot quicker and criminals will have a better of a chance to escape.

That is not from gun control that is from good healthcare and good control over all crime in general. If people have no reason to do a crime why would they do it? Plus we are american, not canadian, austrailian, ect... We have made a point to be "different" than everyone else, and our country was founded on independance. Why cant it stay that way???

when did people loose the will to protect themselves. no body messes with my house because every body around here know that my policy is, shoot fist, shoot some more and then try to ask a question or two. I'm not a big believer in concealed carry, but that's just because when i do carry i want every body to know I'm armed.
