I am pro-gun and I'd like to detail why I am pro-gun and ask you guys a few questions so that I may better understand your side of the argument.

I believe that the statement "guns protect people" is as ludicrous as "guns kill people." Guns are a tool that may be used for good or evil. The second amendment is in place to protect my right to use this tool to defend my freedom against a tyranical government, as well as muggings, robberies, etc. If you take away my gun, I have no effective means of defending myself against a corrupt government (who would use guns to hurt me) or criminals (who would aquire guns illegally). If you got your way and outlawed guns, how would you suggest I protect myself from these evils?

It seems that the anti-gun stance focuses on violence and neglegence with a firearm. Hasn't this always been a crime? Why not focus on tougher sentencing for gun misuse instead of passing laws that limit the ways law abiding citizens can defend themselves? Obviously criminals can always get guns when they want them. Just take England, Australia, and Japan for example.

It's true that I don't need a semi-auto .50 caliber to hunt deer. But firearms of that nature should not be outlawed for that reason, since that is not the sole reason that people own guns in this country. Our forefathers wanted us to be able to defend ourselves. Since I am 250% more likely to be seriously injured in hand to hand combat with an attacker, what do you suggest I do for self defense while I wait the 3 to 5 minutes for the cops to arrive?

Thank you for your time,
Drew Rinella.

While I have nothing against you wanting to go hunting I personally think that if you eat meat you can't truly dislike hunters.  However I really don't see the need of firearms for protecting yourself from a tyranical government.  First of all if the US wanted to send the military against us I don't think a few people with overly large hunting rifles are going to do much against tanks and bombs.  Second of all in a democracy the vote and freedoms of press and speech keep a governemnt in line with the peoples wishes better than guns ever will.

As for the need to protect yourself from criminals.  I agree that criminals will get guns, it doesn't matter how stringent the laws are concerning background checks are, guns will still leak through the only way to truly eliminate the threat is to eliminate all guns which as nice as it would be (not to you I understand) is practically impossible expecially in the US.  But on the other hand the question is if criminals can always get guns why are there so many more gun deaths in the US?

I say the real reason that so many more people die in the US is that as a culture we accept that you can solve a problem with a gun.  While that doesn't mean that everyone goes around killing people when they can't get their way, but more people solve their problems by murder here than any other industrialized country.  So I think the problem is simply that people would rather trust in their guns than the police.  And while responsible gun owners wont kill people their attitude affects those unable distinguich between right and wrong.
